4.14 eagle crank runout out of spec? warped?
so i did some more digging on my 501 stroker as it is tore down . anyways i figured i would put crank and the outer 2 bearings and set up dial indicator on the centre main. i have about .0025 of warped . what you guys think should i send it in for a grind >? should i just get a new crank ? should i run it as is? can it be straightened it is a eagle 10464140 cast crank . the bearings had copped showing on all the main. more so on the bottom half shells . the uppers were not as bad.
when i saddle it in the main and clearance the crank it is all good with standard bearings. with assembly oil and just rotating it i do see mild scuffing on the bearings .
the main caps are all good clearance fit on the block.
thanks

It can be straitened and I’d also watch your main clearances

I had a crank like that once. My machinist said to run it. I had it cut anyway.
Does it turn smooth, with no tight spots? If it does and the bearing clearances looked good, I would be tempted to run it.
If your crank grinders are like the one here, you probably won't get your .003" bearing clearance and be pissed like I was. We did finally get it close with another set of bearings and polishing.

Ya everything checks good . 25 too 28 on the mains rods are tighter clearance for some reason but they are all round

Runout at .0025" is only .00125" off center. This should not be a problem.

So how many of the rods were tight?

They are all tight by like .00035 too like .0006 so I dropped. Rank off at machine shop see what they say one guy said 2 thou runout run it other guy is checking it out .

for me it would depend somewhat on what i was doing with the engine.
however, your bearing will always look like the ones you see now if you run it.
Also, if you have .003 clearance and everything is perfect you have .0015 all the way round.
with your crank you have .00025 clearance on the tight side.
of course your main cap bore could be slightly off a hair, and who knows how those tolerances stack
anyway, it is too tight, your current bearings show that. But they were surviving.
if you have the room on oil pressure maybe fudge a little more clearance with bearing halves.
However, if you push it hard and that wisp of oil film goes away, the crank may grab the bearing and take it for a ride.
If it were me and the engine was a casual fun motor i would try to give it a little more clearance.
if that wasn't possible i would have it straightened, or ground.
if it is a race deal i would have it straightened.
spun bearing could throw rod through the pan and take you and the car out.

0.0025" is a bit out, and it depends on several other factors but yes it could live in an engine.maverick172 wrote:So one machine shop I called said 2 thou max next shop said it will be fine run it
On the other hand, straightening a crank typically takes only a few minutes if you're set up for it.
Re: 4.14 eagle crank runout out of spec? warped?
Ya dropped it off to straighten it but there crank tech is gone on holiday I might just go pick it up and straighten it myself just check it lathe and use air hammer

How old is the crank?....years ago, when Eagle stuff first began showing up, a lot of it was way out of spec. We rejected a lot of cranks and rods for about 2-3 years (early 90's) and then they started getting their act together! I guess a lot of shops were complaining about the same issues.

I think engine was originally built in like 2004 so my guess is around that time . It is a cast crank
