steel rod or aluminium
Ill soon be building a 1200hp 532 deal for a bracket car, NA with a max rpm of about 7500. Would a steel rod be ok or do yall reccomend aluminum? I;d like to stay with a steel rod if possible. Looking at the oliver I beams 6.800 but they dont put any ratings on their website, i guess there are alot of variables, stroke, piston weight, and such

Theres no way id do an aluminum rod for that application. The life span of aluminum rods are going to be way shorter than the rest of the engine. In my mind aluminum rods are reserved for pro mods and fuel cars where nothing in the engine lasts very long.

How are you getting the 1200 out of 532 cu inches though?
Some applications (turbo super charged etc) warrant using aluminum rods.

Everyone here needs to understand that "compressive" strength and "tensile" strength are vastly different things,
Along with an ability to absorb some shock loading as in engines which live on the brink of detonation.
All of this will almost make the determination for you.

I was thinking detuned JC50 or 51, or maybe Nitro. There was a Kanadian Phantom 555 or so CID that claimed 1,200HP with some debated angle worked A Heads awhile back, on the YBullet.

If you go Oliver use the Max series. Callies Ultras will get the job done.

I know of the one you're talking about and those heads had several pounds of welding rod in them.supervel45 wrote:norm wrote:How are you getting the 1200 out of 532 cu inches though?

It's apparent , they had something special going on. Just looking at Phelp's 618 Interceptor tells you that much.

It’s surprising to me that Lem is suggesting steel rods. It’s 2023 and there are many Big and small blocks using aluminum rods with success. They don’t work harden or fail like they used to, I wouldn’t use them in my daily driver but my weekend hot rod or drag car, why not save the weight?

Then you obviously don't have the knowledge that Lem has. I don't want him to have to buy a bigger hat, but he has forgot more than most will ever know on this forum. We have some brilliant minds lurking here.
