Engine VS Chassis Dyno
Josh Jonesin' for a dyno session got me wondering.
Can you get the same info from a chassis dyno as an engine dyno? I understand there are different kinds of chassis dyno's but say your using a high end one that can hold load on the engine.
Making changes on the engine dyno are obviously much easier. What other benefits??

from my understanding the emgine dyno you can tune the engine to it peak and on chassis dyno you get what the engine is putting to the tires and can tune it to get maxs out of your drive tran and engine to that set up and hard to get everything out of the engine for the drive tran might be holding it back from the maxs peak the engine is good for, if that makes any sents to you

Thanks Jim! That's kinda what I was thinking.
Any engine dyno charts I've seen have way more info than a chassis dyno sheets do. Can these parameters not be captured on the rollers?

IMO you've got many more variables to factor in a chassis dyno. Wheel slippage on the rollers, Converter ( is it really suited for your engine? may not know if engine hasn't been dyno'd), and different transmissions and drivetrain differences have to be considered. Both can be useful for tuning I suppose, but as with most other things, you get what you pay. So IMO the higher cost of a day on the engine dyno is probably worth it.
Now, that being said, I have neither been on the rollers of a chassis dyno or paid for a day at the engine dyno. So there!

Thanks Tommy, I guess the engine dyno is the way to go to pin-point just engine stuff and the chassis dyno......just bragging rights??

IMHO the engine dyno is to get ONLY the engine sorted out, the chassi dyno is to make sure everything else is working up to par. Personally I'd go to the engine dyno then once its in the car take it to the chassi dyno, then finally to the track for test and tune night.

An engine dyno is much better for tuning your engine. On a chassis dyno there are too many variables, "too much noise", to see what is going on very well. Also the magnitude of any tuning changes is smaller on a chassis dyno, making them harder to see.
For instance if you make a tuning change, you might gain or lose 10 hp on an engine dyno. On a chassis dyno the same change might show up as maybe a 6-7 hp change. If there is a plus or minus 5hp variation from dyno run to dyno run, even with no changes to the engine, then it becomes very hard to see the result of small changes in tuning on a chassis dyno.
It's easier to see and get consistent results on an engine dyno.

Use an engine dyno to tune the engine, the drag strip to tune the car.
