How much closer to the piston does the valve get with a 2 degree advance and a 4 degree advance?

Wouldn't that depend on your camshaft? Are you just trying to figure out how to tell before you adjust your camshaft?

I believe the duration and ramp speed functions would have an impact on the results but in any case you shouldn't have any problems assuming your have proper clearances now.

Depends on the Cam, where the lobes are ground to start with...... Thiers no rule of thumb or anything like that, it needs to be checked.

I should have checked 4 advanced and 4 retarded when I assembled the motor. Good thing I want to pull the cam to double pin it before it runs. Might do the oiling mods at the same time if I have to pull the heads

Valve clearance Empty Clearance

This was two years ago but, I checked mine from 20 degs BTDC to 20 degs ATDC in 2 degree increments. If I remember right I had to retard the cam 2 degrees and it gained about .015-.020" more clearance on the exhaust valve. The cam was a solid flat of 268/276 @ .050 with .658/.689" lift. I had already flycut pistons and needed additional clearance. Not optimun but it worked okay.
