302 balance question Empty 302 balance question

Post  Larry T February 17th 2010, 11:34 pm

i have a 93 f150 with a 302 that is a efi roller motor.i am going to build a motor for towing so i am in the process of buying a bottom end crank kit.the crank kits come balanced @ 28oz or i can get a harmonic balancer and flywheel @ 50oz.the truck has the push button automatic with a fairly new flywheel.i would like to pull my old balancer off install it to the new crank and use the existing flywheel.

how do i do this the correct way?if i go with the 50oz deal i need to tell them what flywheel i need, anyone know?

Aftermarket crankshafts and components will be for a 28.2 in/oz balance. You'll need a different balancer and flywheel/flexplate than the original "93.

If it is simply a reground later 302 factory crank in the kit then get the 50 in/oz balanced kit.

As Randy said it all depends upon the crank that you're using. The 5.0 engines built after 82 have the 50oz balance factor front and rear. You can't interchange these parts with the 28oz stuff BUT if you would change the whole crank you could. In other words if you get a 2M style crank you use the 28oz 2MAE and you use the 50, it's very easy to tell them apart. The 50oz version has an oddly shaped "square" counterweight the 4th one from the front, if yours has this, use the 50.

i want to keep the motor i have in the truck for now until i get a motor built.i have a newer model roller 302 block that i am going to buy a kit to build this motor from scratch.its good to know the newer models have the 50oz balance so thats the way i am going.i found a AOD 85-95 flex plate for the 50oz balance motors so i am good to go on that.the crank kit is from scat so i will just let them know that i need it set up for the 50oz balance.the motor i am building is a basic 347 stroke and rods with a .060 bore=352 cin it has to be better than what is in the truck now.

next i will need a cam and topend recomendations for towing....anyone like to help with that?

IMO ..no way for a 50 oz. stroker sbf. best is neutral balance, even though high rpm not the goal

I don't think that Scat does any 50oz balance stroker stuff but you should check with them and see. 50oz or 28oz vs internal balance is a moot point on a low rpm application it will make absolutely no difference.

You learn something new everyday ... I didn't realize that SCAT offered a 50 in/oz kit with one of their aftermarket cranks in it.

OK my bad No my bad :no

i reread the email and it said If it's late model it's setup to balance at 50oz. the kits are all setup for 28oz. I can do a balancer, flexplate and balancing in a kit if you'd like.
