storage oil (coating)
what do you guys use to protect engine parts that are going to be stored for long periods?
I have tried storage oil that is used on water craft and such. Still my heads rusted. Stored in a dry, but not climate controlled building. Humidity is my biggest problem I think.
Thanks Dave

I store mine in Phoenix, never had anything rust if it was inside. Hell, they barely rust if you leave them in the yard.

I just coat them heavily with Liquid Wrench on castings, or grease on machined surfaces, & bag 'em in head/crank bags. I have the same climate as you. Seems to work OK as long as they don't sit directly on concrete.

Re: storage oil (coating)
i will try the storage bags. I have coated them with liquid wrench and put them on a 2x6 board on the concrete and they rusted. The bags might do the trick. I have a bunch of old Y-block & FE stuff I need to store. trying to get shop organized.
Thanks

Good thick storage or garbage bags are good. I have also had good luck with using the shop vac to suck all the air out of the bag too.

Dave I will check at work and see what it is called but we get a Rust inhibitor it comes in a aerosol can and works rather well, and if I remember we also had some stuff you add to water and spray it on with a garden sprayer that worked also....

Boe-shield works very well too...probably similar to what Randy is referring too...hard to find locally, though. Boeing invented it for aircraft parts & tooling though I believe another company makes it now. http://www.boeshield.com/ Sears sometimes will have it locally.
Bill added something I forgot...you need to either get most of the air out, or just leave the bag completely open for airflow. If humid air is trapped inside you just get condensation over & over again. I don't like trash bags, though, because they seem to be water-permeable, and they break down with sunlight exposure. I just buy crank/head bags or block bags from the machinist which are either 3 or 4 mil. You can buy 'em in bulk, but I don't need 100 head bags....or, an excuse to buy 100 cylinder heads.
I've also made my own "bags" from 3 mil plastic, for weird shapes or large objects, and sealed them as best I could with a line of caulk, and repeatedly folding the seams, like 4-5 times over while the caulk is curing, then stapling them. Pain in the arse.

In Newfoundland you can hear your car rust in the driveway I coat everything in axle grease... inside and out. It's a pain in the butt to clean again though.

Re: storage oil (coating)
awhile ago I bought some h beam rods that were new... I was to lazy to go out in the garage and get the WD-40. so I coated the big and small ends with vegetable oil, and put them each in a bag and put them away... I just got them back out to look at them 2-3 months later and the oil has dried into a hard coating, completely sealing the bearing surfaces... have I stumbled onto something?

Re: storage oil (coating)
A guy that built engines for a long time told me to mix a quart of oil (10w-30 pennzoil, its what I had)with a bottle of STP oil treatment and use a paintbrush to put on the parts. I have a C9 block thats been on an engine stand for about 4 yrs(sad I know) with this stuff on it and there is no sign of rust anywhere, even the freshly bored cylinder walls. I just covered it with a regular black plastic garbage bag. It cleans off really easily with just about anything. Actually I took the bag off about 2 months ago and this mixture has kinda cured to something that reminds me of cosmoline. The building I keep it in is really damp, so yes it does work. Nothing exotic and it works.

Re: storage oil (coating)
I've had excellent success using Corrosion X HD coating on parts. Complete long term protection, and yet is quite easily cleaned off with a little solvent.
