What Octane or fuel to use ?
I am building my 460 and got a lot of parts in a deal . I got a real nice set of Pop up forged pistons . The guy told me he thinks they were like 11 or 11.5 to i compresson . I was looking for flat tops but got these in the deal with other parts I bought .
My question is will these run on pump gas of 93 octane ?
Hope someone can help !

93 with some octane boost! just my 3 cents...my 460 iron head engine is 11:1 compression stock and i mix cam2 and 93

I wonder if you can whack the tops of the pistons to make them flattops? I would think 25% 110 race fuel and 75% pump premium would be OK. The tune would have to be spot on though.

whats the part number and whos pistons? What heads are you going to use?
You need to watch TRW / Sealed power domed pistons with some small chamber heads can go well over 13:1......

Re: What Octane or fuel to use ?
I don't have any around here yet . I am sure there might be with all the race tracks in my area . I have the Lincoln Racway not 5 minutes from me for sprint cars and Quarter Aces Dragway about 45 mins and Maple Grove about 1.5 hours from me .
He is my problem , I am buildong the 460 for my 1937 Plymouth p/u and in Pa we need to go through a special inspection to get a title and tag for the car . I am thinking down the road that if it will be too much BS then I will build a mild drag truck . I got these pistons in the deal . TRW , L2443 N--Standard bore . I have tried to find the compression out and the best I have come up with is 10.5 to 1 .
I would like to use them if possible but if I need 100 octane I need to either buy 100 octane or use additives to raise the octane .
This is what I am trying to find out .

Looking for a 460 crank !

If you have Small Chamber Heads (DOOE-R, DOVE, Ect) you will be over 13:1 using those pistons or in the 10.5:1 range with the bigger chamber stuff (D3's and such)
Good news is the domes can be cut off and you can get it down to 11.5:1 or so with the small chamber stuff.

Re: What Octane or fuel to use ?
The guy did have the engine with those pistons running on pump gas . It was in a tow truck and that thing flew ! It had a Crane 266 cam in it as I have that also .
The heads is the mystery to me so far as the # is D VE. I can see the second letter , It's gone ! I belive they are DOVE heads but not sure . The pistons are on DOOE rods . Wish I could tell which heads they are .

Can you get them CC'd, 72-75 = Early and 90-94 = Later

Don't know how , I know the measurments but have no way of doing it .
Like I said I believe they are DOVE heads buy the rest of the parts that came off the engine but no guarantee on that one .

Is the motor together at this point? I guess I'm confused. You ask what octane fuel will be required for your build, but you're unable or unwilling to get such a crucial piece of information? Please, I'm not trying to come across as a jerk, but there are many factors that determine what octane is required for a motor to steer clear of detonation. The top two (IMO), are static compression and cam profile (thus dynamic compression).

Take a head to a local machinist and have him (or her - equal opportunity!), cc a chamber.

Re: What Octane or fuel to use ?
I guess I will more than likely just have them shaved to flat tops so I can use pump gas for safety . I just hate to do that to a piston .
I will have my machinest check the combustion chamber for the cc also when he does the heads . I am getting bigger intake valves installed too . I know that when you do by pistons they usually say if you have these CC heads then you will have this as a compression ratio . That is what I was trying to find out right now . Can't find that anyplace !
Thanks,
Jim

Re: What Octane or fuel to use ?
I already told you what it will be, you need to figure out the CC of your combustion chambers.
13:1 +/- with the Small Chambers with the Dome
11.5:1 +/- on Small chamber heads w/o the Dome
10.5:1 +/- with Big Chamber heads with the Dome
9:1 +/- with Big Chamber Heads w/o the Dome

Yes but I don't have a machinest that is that fast ! Was just looking for something close so I know where I stand .
I do have some D3 heads that I could use the with .
Thanks again !

D3's = about 10.5:1 with the domes on.

Re: What Octane or fuel to use ?
Well I decided to go and measure the intake valves to see if that helps to figure out which heads I have before I go to the machinest .
Well to my surprize the intakes are 2 & 1/8" . The heads have never had any work and they have no emission on them .
