Ok my new engine won't crank ?!!! Empty Ok my new engine won't crank ?!!!

Post  Big block fox 339 March 26th 2010, 8:40 am

Ok I tried starting my 545 last night this my first build I'm a Lil worried. I put the dist in at 16 degrees before tdc. It spun a few seconds then it got fuel but still didn't fire off the weird thing is when you spin It then turn the key off it sounds like It starts spinning really fast and starts blowing air out of the carb what did I do wrong ? Sorry I'm a newb

Did you put the distributor in 180 out. It is a very common mistake.

Sounds like it's out a little. When the marker is about 10* ,look and see if it's pointing at the #1 plug wire terminal on the cap. And are you sure that the valves aren't too tight Exclamation

180* will still blow your finger off the hole you have to look at the blancer to double check. Check for spark

What ignition are you running? alot of times people run switched power from a source that is killed during cranking so they get no spark while cranking.

The small red must go to a switched 12v source that remains on when cranking. Use a testlight to find and a remote push button to find a source that stays lit while the engine is being cranked. If you cnverted from duraspark I believe the red wire in the IGN harness that went to the + on the coil originally has 12v switched. I have Painless switches and wiring and its been awhile since i tapped into a stock harness. Sorry I couldnt be more specific.
