Big motor. Nice #s! Got a buddy that has some bad ass DOVE heads. Made like 787. With a 60 over motor him and his dad have been dealing with BBF for a loooong time. The heads have some crazy exhaust port plate on then. Super nice heads. Just don't think I want to spend the $ and them not being any better then what I got. Plus going from aluminum to an iron head would be hard.

Jerimiah I am not going to try and bust your bubble but if they did make an honest 787 then you better buy those heads cuz yours will never do that no matter how many cubes you put them on.....and I mean NEVER......
your intake ports and Combustion chambers hmmmm let say SUCK at best and that giving them alot of credit.....
so if you can get those DOVEs for a good price I say go for it.....

What does a good set of doves go for ready to bolt on? And what does the plates on the exhaust ports do? Raise the ports?

Re: How much N/A Hp are you making with GOOD dove heads?
the exhaust port plates just raise the exhaust port to increase the flow cuz some people do not think they flow enough to make good power, but in the last several years and lots of testing have found out that some reason all the extra work is not fully and absolutely necessary. cuz a well worked DOVE or CJ port can make power without raising it.... excessively, on the DOVEs most of the flow is in the short turn of the port ....

Re: How much N/A Hp are you making with GOOD dove heads?
ports plates are more beneficial to upright headers.
if you want 700+ horsepower D0VE"S you'll spend some serious money.
D0VE bare heads can be found cheap, but having them rubbed on from a competant porter and set up for over 700hp will make your wallet $3000 or more lighter.
I'm thinking you're starting to do the math in your head now and wondering why you'd bother when you can buy a much better flowing and lighter set for that.
For a DIY porter D0VE's are a great bang for buck...
would it be fair to say a competent DIY could make 600-650???
(following scotty's site)
as randy eluded to.. port plates are not necessary.
if you were running upright headers you may see some benefit.

Re: How much N/A Hp are you making with GOOD dove heads?
Very good power there. Don't know the dyno it was done on, but there are many variables as far as dyno's go. I have a set of DOVE's flowing 340 on the intake, and made 600+ HP on Bret Powell's dyno. He has made mention that his dyno is a little on the stingy side. This is not a max effort by any means, and has 18" of vac@1000 rpm for a mud drag class. Anything above 700hp is very respectable. The crazy plates on the heads are Price Motorsports Plates. Very spendy to put on as you essentially grind off about 1" of the exhaust port and put the outer set of head bolts through them. The heads will be more prone to crack, because of the way they work, and are hard to seal. IMHO I'd leave them alone, more trouble than what they may be worth. A budget ported set of DO or D3's from Scotty J will get you past the 600 HP range with a good combo.

It is a race car they would be going on.He wants 1200 for the heads, solid roller cam and lifters that was in the motor. I already have the intake on my car.is that a fair deal or should I save more $ and buy aluminum heads?

Re: How much N/A Hp are you making with GOOD dove heads?
Either the dyno is way happy, wrong correcrion numbers used, or the car has major issues. That deal with those numbers and a kit should run in the 8's

Re: How much N/A Hp are you making with GOOD dove heads?
No man.... That was on the engine dyno. they put the motor on the dyno after they built it. My car has the procomps on it now and I was thinking about trying the DOVE heads on my 466 to compair them to my procomps..

Re: How much N/A Hp are you making with GOOD dove heads?
yeah I know, a 750 engine dyno hp and a 175 should run a hell of a lot better than a 9.90, It should do that on motor alone.
What I'm getting at is those are exceptional numbers for a dove headed motor...............too good, and the timeslip supports that.
I would not swap heads, yeah the doves might be better, but those numbers dont add up.................unless it was dyno'd at sea level and the car run at Denver or something.

Re: How much N/A Hp are you making with GOOD dove heads?
The Hp #s are with a 60 motor they sold the short block and have the heads cam and intake. 990 is what my car went with the procomps. The dove motor was built as a spare motor for there mud truck. but never put in anything. I'm wanting to compair them to my procompsand put them on my car
