what valve size to choose for torque
Hello,
I'm having my fuellie F3TE heads machined.
Stock valve size is 2.090" intake / 1.65 exhaust.
I'm having new seats in them as well, so i might do it all at once, and install bigger valves.
What size valves should i aim for, when i want torque form idle up, and redline at 4500-5000 rpm?
Bigger intake, or just bigger exhaust, or both?
Thinking about 2.25" intake / 1.76" exhaust.
Will this be a good choice for my setup?
thnx.

I don't have the knowledge to answer your question unfortunately, but you would be best to detail your build a little and explain the application so the gurus will respond.
good luck.
good luck.

Re: what valve size to choose for torque
okay, but i thought there was enough info to answer the question, to be haunest.
Build is a .030 overbored 460, making it 466.
pistons are keithe black hypereutectic flattops.
Block is D9TE, zero decked with the flattops.
Heads are the F3TE fuellie heads (late model) with stock 2.09 / 1.65 valve size.
Head/block combination will be approx. 10.5:1 CR.
Intake is the EFI single plane manifold.
torque converter approx. 1200Rpm stall, assembled with a E4OD, final gear 0.7:1
Application is a heavy 5000lbs car.
Intended priority is economy, and lots of torque.
Still awaiting some cam info from Lunati, but no response yet ( filled form 2 weeks ago)
So, what would the advice be: larger valves or not?
No high-rpm use, max is approx. 5000rpm, but will very rarely been seen.
highway cruise speed will be approx. running 1700 Rpm.
Thanks!.

Call Lem Evans he can get you a quote and a spec in less than 24 hrs.

Comp Cams XE-256H-14.
Give me about a month and I will tell you how it works. I bought one for my F-350 with a E40D transmission.

Re: what valve size to choose for torque
This is the one that's currently with the engine indeed.
I just want to know if it's right, or if there's a better choice, since i don't have to use the stock computer, and won't run on gasoline...
Very curious though how it'll work with your application.
Let me know when it's done.
thanks.

If you have the ability to tune your engine , then just call Randy Malick and have him spec you a custom grind , also he can tell you what valve size and what to do as far as porting the heads for torque. He has been there and done that with dyno info to back it up.
Just PM him............

Any opinions?
Thanks.

That cam is close to the Comp cam , but may be close to problems with the stock springs. I think Randy can probably spec a better one, being you can tune the efi.

Re: what valve size to choose for torque
i will contact him tomorrow.
When i buy a new cam, i also want to buy new springs and little parts, plus new lifters. Would be wrong saving to discount on those...

Right here Blake, lol.
For a torquey tow vehicle and getting great milage I've used Pontiac valves of the correct length. A 2.110" head diameter intake valve with a 30° seat and a 1.66" exhaust valve with a tulip shaped backside.
The 30° intake seat is important as long as the transition to the bowl is not to large; (high velocity within the port begins lower in the valve lift). I've tried 37.5° like the International engines and it also worked "half way decent" but not as well.
S.I. makes the exact valves needed for a D0VE style head, (which use a bit longer stem) ... the shorter valves are also available but, I don't know if the exhaust valve has a tulip backside. Those shorter Pontiac intake valves for D3 and later heads are #6004SG, (they have a .250" tip so, the lock groove is higher). The shorter Pontiac exhaust valve, (if you want them to match), with the matching .250" tip is #6001E, (it has a second groove for an "o" ring stem seal like many GM's).
I used an older Lunati #06169 camshaft for F.I. which I'm told is only available "special order" now days. The CompCams camshaft mentioned is REAL close; (a bit larger@.050").
For a couple of builds I used a "custom" camshaft but, I'd have to go back in the records to find out which.
