I thought things were looking up Empty I thought things were looking up

Post  Mike R July 15th 2010, 8:06 pm

I thought things were looking up. We got busy at work again, making money, able to afford some parts for my Fairmont and then my mom comes by the shop today. She wanted to let me know my dad has alzheimer's. I knew he's been having a lot of complications from diabetes and a bad accident he had years ago but this is a major blow. Apparently they've known for a few months but didn't want to worry us until they knew more. She said he's in pretty bad shape and I should probably spend as much time with him as I can so that's what I'm going to do.

Take every bit of time you have left with him and get the best out of it. Spend as much time as you can with him, its sad to hear this. No one should have to go through this.

I feel sorry for you sir, I lost my mother to that dreadful sickness, it has got to be the worst way that a person can go, I realy am sorry to hear you have to go through it, and like everyone said, enjoy every minute you have left with him, god bless...Harold

Sorry to hear that.

It is a nasty deal but I think it is worse for the family than the person that has the sickness. My dad's uncle has it and he just goes along, every day is a fresh start. Some days early on he got pretty frustrated and angry but now he just plays with stuff. Every now and then he will really surprise you and talk about stuff he hadn't mentioned in years. He came from Holland and my dad brought him a CD of dutch church songs and he sang right along with them, knew every word.

Enjoy your time with him. We're thinking of you and your family.

As has been said before, cherish the time you have with him. My mom's dad got it real bad. He would call me by his sons name all of the time. Long term memory is still there, but the day to day stuff gets pretty hazy for them. Be very patient and understanding, they can get beligerent also and start to argue about the most insignificant things also, so read a lot about it and how to deal with it. Cool

Very true Schmitty, there are also lots of support groups out there for you too. They have lots of info on what to expect and how to help them best.
