Help with 67 mustang caltracs and leaf springs
combination 414 sbf with 150-250 nos have 9 way adjustable rear shocks 3 way adjustable fronts currently 60/40 shock setting on front. car lifts front tires about 10-12 inches off ground 10 inches of travel in front end. cal tracks on back with one leaf removed from leaf springs. powerglide transmission with 411 rear gears
car 60 1.46 4.14 6.36 150hit
on 250 car leaves violently immediately spins the tires in smoke while front end is in the air and then goes whichever ways the tires are spinning.
tried loosening the shocks on rear but think that was the wrong thing to do.
anybody running leaf springs and caltracks running 590s or quicker in the 1/8 mile

Not to many guys on here running anything like that anymore. Lots of Stock and super stock guys out there somewhere that might have good ideas. What size tire are you running?

I run Cal-Trac Split Mono leaf spring. I think they work much better than stock leaf spring with a leaf removed. Plus what hole are you using for the Cal-Trac bar, top or bottom. I run Rancho 9000 set at 5.

Re: Help with 67 mustang caltracs and leaf springs
I had best luck with the lower hole on the Cal Tracs. I have crappy rear shocks and stock rear springs so I can't really comment more other than to say everything I've read has been to get the adjustable rears and run them a bit stiff. You seem to have plenty working right up front.

caltracs
Get the mono leaf if you don't already have it. Rancho shocks set on 8 or 9. use the lower hole for a farther out front of the car instant center. Is it possible when you pick up the front end your unloading the rear what about front end limiters to help tune the overall chassis. Just some thoughts I do run the springs caltracs and shocks just not at your level. I do have a fox body t-bird that dealing me fits thou#%#@Q%@

Re: Help with 67 mustang caltracs and leaf springs
Because the Caltrac design is on the violent side it can cause problems as a given car's "at launch" power numbers increase. You can try to calm the initial hit violence down by stiffening up the rear shock's extension valving, and/or dropping to a lower front hole. But with enough power on tap you could eventually run out of adjustment & find yourself with the shocks set at "full tight" and still have a setup that needs to be calmed down even more with no way to get there. It just depends on the car & combo.
I think on a car with big power and a Caltrac setup (or similar design) & a power adder (like nitrous) some kind of a progerssive or staged system setup would be a benifit.

I'd put a timer on the NOS and turn it on with a progressive controller some where after the 60ft mark.

Re: Help with 67 mustang caltracs and leaf springs
I would really like to hear more info on this guys! I am having traction issues with my truck and am/was considering Cal-Tracs I have talked to a few guys running them at my track and the opinion of them wasn't very good. General consensus was they shoulda spent the money to go ladderbar set-up. The common complaint was they need to be tuned every outing to the track and with only 2 qualifying passes in my class it is very hard to tune them and get them right. I also have heard people say they are greatest thing since sliced bread but noone I have personally met.
It would seem to me that once you get a good baseline with a little expirementing you would know what each adjustment was gonna do but having run ladder bars before myself I know how easy it is to tune them.

Re: Help with 67 mustang caltracs and leaf springs
I adjusted my Cal Trac first couple times out and have been that way for years.
Re: Help with 67 mustang caltracs and leaf springs
We have gotten the mustang down to a 5.96 with a terriable 1.41 .60 foot we are ordering the cal track mono leaf over the winter stock springs right now with cal track bars. we have found several cars and one truck running mid to low 5s in the 8th with no problems. it can be done.

What would cause the guys I talked to to have to constantly need to adjust them? Are they just not getting them right and need more tuning to get them right? Just want to make a good decision before I spend the money.

Re: Help with 67 mustang caltracs and leaf springs
Maybe there just not set up right from the get go. Who knows.....
Re: Help with 67 mustang caltracs and leaf springs
Hmm, that may be true. I am leaning more towards ladderbars with housing floaters.

why not ladderbars and coil overs? why mess with the leafs at all if your thinking ladderbars?

Re: Help with 67 mustang caltracs and leaf springs
Because there already there and I already have $250 worth of adjustable shocks back there, basically save money. I would hate to throw $250 dollars in the scrap pile if not needed.

Re: Help with 67 mustang caltracs and leaf springs
I'd sell the shocks and put that toward the coilover deals. Be way better than a leafspring/ floater setup......lighter as well.
