They are actually quit a capable performer considering the tech of the day, I've seen some head flows the are pretty impressive. They where pretty stout hot rod motors

I have a 460 out of a 69 Lincoln with a weird thing like that built into the front timing cover. Strange.

Lincolns form about 58-69 all had crankshaft driven power steering pumps. Weather is was a 430, 462, or 460. We used to sell them and the seals all the time.

Problem is parts avalibility, no modern intakes avaliable, pistons will be custom, valve train parts as far as rockers are weak by todays stds., cam core avalibility..... Etc.

But the respond to all the same basic Hot Rod tricks, improve the induction, carb, port heads, modern cam profile, headers, timing / ignition mods, ect.

There was also a 383 inch version of the MEL, used in the MERCURY "Super Murderer" cars. I built a 410(Edsel Citation) motor 50 years ago so, from mamory, The FE oil pumps interchange, heads are flat...combustion chamber is in the angle decked block, has pressed pins, MERCURY had a 3 carb manifold, If the valve covers have a number pressed into them...it's the torque rating of the motor, throw the stock valves away, ISKY used to grind cams for them,....mamory faadddiiinnnnngggg. Cool

Hey, Nick: My grandfather had a 58 Mercury Turnpike Cruiser - WHAT A BARGE! I remember that the cylinder heads where some real heavy mothers, I found that out when I couldn't lift the cylinder heads off the engine when we did a valve job on it - I had to climb into the engine compartment, straddle the engine to lift them up! The car wasn't very quick (4,400 lbs), but it WAS fast. We were on the highway one day when a guy blew by us in a Chrysler 330 G - well, that pissed off old grandpa - he matted the pedal screaming "no goddamned Chrysler is gonna beat me"! It sounded like a supercharger screaming (actually, it was grandma screaming in the back seat "we're gonna die, we're gonna die")! Pops had the speedometer pegged at 120 when he blew the doors off the Chrysler (I can still remember the guy in the Chrysler rocking back and forth in his seat as if it would make his car go a little faster - it didn't!
