1969 cougar 460 cooling help
I need help with my cooling, I have herd of some people running machanical fans on there 67-70 mustangs w/460's, but I dont see how to make it work, do you move the radiator foward ? I'd say this is my biggest gripe about the 460 swap in my cougar and this is the biggest reason I think about a small block. If any of ya'll have pictures of how to do this I would be thrilled !

Re: 1969 cougar 460 cooling help
the only one i ever had room for in my mustang,69,was a flex fan w/o a spacer. i ran a single groove lower pulley too.the 460 is tuff to cool in these cars, the whole dam frontend get's hot. does a cougar not have a few inches more room at the rad/support than a mustang?

The 69 cougar was based off of the 68 mustang, so they are pretty damn similar in some areas like that. Its probably the same.cool40 wrote:does a cougar not have a few inches more room at the rad/support than a mustang?

ive installed about 15 or 20 460 in 67 68 69 70 mustangs, cougars, torinos, always have been able to use a belt driven fan, same front to back as boss 429 eng bay room, we have added elct. fans to some, i dont know why your having a problem?
are you using the short water pump? cj/scj style, or boss 429 which is also shorter,it just has the lower out hose in a different spot

Should have the same room as if it had a FE.If everything is right w/engine,there should'nt be a problem w/man or w/elec. fan. What compression ratio is the engine?

Re: 1969 cougar 460 cooling help
I'm just running standard pickup water pump..I have a single grove pulley on crank, about what size flex fan should
I get ?
Compression is only 10-10.5 Puting a flex fan on it is what I would like. I have a 3 row big block radiator in it, and have a short shaft pump I think ??

Water pump and crank pulley (short throw) from 68 or 69 Thunderbird or Lincoln.

im late to the conversation
hope this helps ? im new to this site , I have a 1969 cougar with about a 550 hp 460 automatic trans street car in New Mexico . have street driven it in Phoenix Az in Augast as well . i have had a few overheat problems over the years . the first was stop and go traffic in 90 deg plus heat. i had a factory style 4 core big block radiator and short water pump . a small block 4 blade factory steel fan . the temprature would climb at stop lights to boil over. as long as i was moving i was fine at about 190 deg.... I then wanted to fix that problem by removing the steelblade fan and installing 2 12" electric fans pulling, and then the car would over heat under normal driving ??? got worse..... then bought a thick 2 row aluminum rad and was better but would still over heat normal driving in about 15 min. then removed the electric fans and went back to the factory steel four blade small block fan and added a factory bigblock fe fan shroud and problem was solved .... one note: to all . be carefull of auto part store thermastats i had 3 thermastats that were not accurate temp . i was running fuel inj so wanted a 195 deg thermastat 1 was opening at 180 . took itr back got anouther that didnt open till 205 then anouther at 170 ????? all rated at 195 . bought 1 from Ford it deliverd acccurate results worked perfect at 195

help
Alright I know its no the same car but my torino gave me fits for years being street driven wilth a 11.5 comp 429. Would only stay at 180-190 while crusing. At stops your nerves would be shot as the temp would climb to 220 in some cases. This was witha 4 core crossflow rad-straight 7 blade fan. the cure for me was simple I went to a cheap 2 row inch tube ALUM radiator a clutch fan and a aftermarket fan shrould from crites. Now I can drive from my house to the track at 170-180 get in the staging lanes and make back to back passes in 100 degree heat without seeing 200 temp the problem now is the fuel starts to boil you know vaperlock!! I vote get a aluminum radiator first I think I paid like 159.00 from summit for a 19-31 I know your will be smaller but it will help!
