Timing poll
What are you guys running for total timing? List: Eng cubes, compression, Alum or Cast heads. Lets see what were all working with. Thanks.

31* with the TFS street heads, will be lower I'm sure with the P51's.
Give it what it wants.

Re: Timing poll
Ok here goes. Still working on it but at 34 degrees car ran fine. A429 heads. Bumped timing to 38 degrees and car picked up all the way around. Still need to do a little more testing but 38 has been the best. Tried 36 last year but with different cam and carb. and 38 had the best numbers on the time slip.

Wow, 38* of timing. Never heard big blocks needing that much timing

Re: Timing poll
I've heard of some BBF's wanting to be in the low 40's.1Bad91 wrote:514Fox87 wrote:Ok here goes. Still working on it but at 34 degrees car ran fine. A429 heads. Re: Timing poll
FE (BBF's) like timing a little higher than a 385 series.

Re: Timing poll
I was talking about the 385 series, someone said that their engine wanted like 42. Someone else didn't agree that that was right, you be the judge. I've yet to set mine up but I want to put a lot of timing into it for many reasons. Low compression should help me run a higher advance hopefully. I can't wait to test it out.

So what kind of compression are you talking about to liking alot of timing? I just found out my timing had moved from 33* to almost 40*. (and I have no fn clue either) SO I been running almost 40* timing this entire time since the rebuild. My friend helped me set my timing but he showed me 33* when we set it

Re: Timing poll
yes, running msd and same timing light. However, I did change my springs softer ones in dist. That cant change the timing I wouldnt think

Re: Timing poll
for sure can.if your softer spring is a lot softer it could be advancing more now.1Bad91 wrote:yes, running msd and same timing light. However, I did change my springs softer ones in dist. That cant change the timing I wouldnt think

Re: Timing poll
some overlook carb jetting when testing timing curves.
I posted this to awnser the question, please dont use this for a chart, there is a lot of info here that not being known might burn yor engine up,we have tried a lot of different things not just changing timing to make these work, air bleeds, some locked out timing, some with 22 int ,and some really big jets, and fuel from c14 to q 16 to 89/93 oct

Re: Timing poll
the perfect timing for your engine -- you have to find it . now if you have all the specs for a given engine /drivetrain combo posted you can use that timing .

Re: Timing poll
Your right, I will have to find the sweet spot, but this is the part I find most interesting about builds. Learning these fine tune parts are key and sorta interesting to hear all the different timing places people are running.

Re: Timing poll
and I may be shocked to find where the sweet spot is being under 10:1 compression and 504 cubic inch.

Super low compression maybe, not typical with something with a little wind.

Re: Timing poll
472 DOVE heads previously DOOE both ported 13.5 comp, both used same timing. 32 to 38 produced quickest times but 28 to 30 produced way more consistant times with best mph. This was with alky fuel. Years back when running race gas same setup was run all the way up to 45 degrees. The more you put in it the faster it got. I was only testing and was afraid to run it high, so most all time it was around 36-38.
Extra note. The highest altitude in this state is 806 asl and that point is about 60 miles from tracks.

Re: Timing poll
I'm gonna try 36* with the 92 octane. Hope it does ok
