Ky bust's a pinion support
Talked to Ky , looks like he ripped out his pinion support. He went a 5.10 pass first time trial.
The tune was lean because the new air pan was pushing more air in the engine and the barometer was high also. He richened up the tune for the next pass and left at 6000 rpm.
That"s when the carnage ensued............. Too much Cow Bell

Re: Ky bust's a pinion support
If Randy is using a 3/8" stud pinion support, sounds like he's making enough power that it might be time for the 7/16" stud stuff. Is he running a standard or big pinion gear set?

I would hope he's running a big pinion! Otherwise, get used to breaking stuff!

Re: Ky bust's a pinion support
It's amazing how much the price jumps from the small pinion pro gear to the big pinion pro gear, even though it's the same material. Not to mention a few more dollars for the big 1-1/2" socket for the big-assed pinion nut.

Re: Ky bust's a pinion support
It appears to have pushed the pinion support out pulling out the bolts and heli coils. I don't know if it broke a gear first and caused this or not. I will pull it out tomorrow. This was a light weight strange case with the big pinion pro gears.
I guess I am gonna step up to the ultra case with 12 pinion support studs. and put my 4:30 gears back in
On a positive note Wes ran a 5.43

Re: Ky bust's a pinion support
What are you referring to the planitaries , don't see any damage externally, there was no gears broken looks like it just pushed the pinion support out, it did chew on the ring gear after it jumped forward.
Launch before it broke , smooth as silk 5 numbers better 60' and 8 mph faster than last outing at Holly springs Mississippi

Re: Ky bust's a pinion support
I really can't see how these things take the abuse we throw at them!! It's amazing they make a pass without busting something...Mine usually doesn't make a weekend without something needing repaired anymore. Dang u-joints are amazing to take that kind of power time after time. Good luck Randy ,if I got anything you need ,just let me know..

Re: Ky bust's a pinion support
One bolt bolt that was lodged in held the pinion support in place so the drive shaft did not whip anything it just turned.
I appreciate the offers with the gears , but I got a large pinion 4:30 I am going to put in. Strange said those light weight aluminum cases were originally built for 1800 lb dragsters so I was pushing my luck anyway
I got one of these on the way

That's what i have. you'll love it. Even though it's aluminum it's not a lightweight but it's been good to us.

Re: Ky bust's a pinion support
how do those compare to the strange nodular cases? I got a 28 spline daytona pinion setup with a richmond gear 33 spline spool, I intend on 850-950hp n/a, powerglide, 3000lbs.... pushin it?
