1999 F150 Help Empty 1999 F150 Help

Post  jones October 28th 2010, 7:44 pm

My father in-law has a 99 F150 with the v6 and manual transmission. Last week the truck just died and would only spin over. I replaced the fuel filter and noticed the fuel pump wasn't turning on. When it would crank it would run very ruff, puff black smoke and the throttle pedal had no effect.
Changed, fuel pump, spark plugs and spark plug wires and the truck was driving fine up til last night. Went dead at a stop light with no warning. Would crank and run real ruff just as before. Put a fuel pressure gauge on it and it had zero pressure. It cranked this afterrnoon and ran fine. Shut it down and tried to crank it again and it wouldn't crank.

Computer doesn't have any codes and no check engine light this time or last time.

Would that keep the fuel pump from turning on?

Someone mentioned ignition switch?

Jones you got me thinking check the fuel pump relay some times when the pump goes out the will get the relay or relay goes out shortly after replacing pump.On my 86 the fuel pump relay is the same as the A/C relay not sure if are on the 99 but look and see if you can swap them and try it

Is there some type of switch under the dash? Some guy had my father in-law looking for a button under the dash. I'll have to take my meter tomorrow and check the fuses and relays tommorow.

My dad had some crazy no fuel issues with his 88 Bronco II he had years ago.One day i told him to try the inertia switch i took off my Mustang he changed it sold the Bronco and the guy ran it over a year with no problems. The inertia switch on the Bronco II was under the dash bolted to the firewall.

I'm willing to bet you are right, just fixed my fiancees car with the exact same problem. I do not know what possessed Mazda to put the relay behind the rear kick panel though Shocked

sometimes when you have a weak spark the computer will shut the pump down so the cylinders won't fill w/fuel. You probably have a coil going bad, ign. module OR like was said,a bad regulator.

SOunds like issues we seen everyday out at the Arizona proving grounds, but these were 2008 and newer.

Fuel pump driver module. (maodule it's self, or connection issue's)

Does the 99 have one? Not sure, might look?
If it does, it should be around the rear of the truck, left frame rail, or near the spare tire...?

Its another fuel pump. Checked all relays and fuses, the pump sees power but nothing happens. Strange!

I don't know where it came from, I let some one else fool with lifting the bed and changing the pump. I'll throw it on the trailer and take it back to him.

There is a reset button behind the passanger side kick panel. We pushed the button and the truck cranked right up and ran for 10min and went dead. Figured the fuel pump was overheating. The guy replaced the new fuel pump and the truck is back running again.

Amazing how crappy automotive parts are these days.

Jones,

that rest button is for the intertia switch when the vehicle is hit,it's possible the switch could be going bad.

Later Mark.
