4x4 puller truck final drive ?
I'm starting to get some parts together for a smallblock puller, just wondering if anyone has any idea where the final on one of these should be. 31 inch tire max, cast in/cast out. i'm thinking somewhere in the 30-32:1 range but just guaging if i'm on the right track
Engine in question will be a 351 clevor.

Re: 4x4 puller truck final drive ?
I'm just using a stock windsor block i got in depth finder for now. With the parts i got and what i'm trying to put together it'll be a grenade/time bomb, but i'll only make it to 3 pulls maximum next year.
This is just to get out there as cheap as i can, (but not embarass myself)
I can run lots of cubic inch, but with cast in/cast out i just figured why waste a big block on those ridiculous rules
but if the price is right.........lol

Even with the dumb cast in cast out rules, a decent 460 with D3's is gonna do better than a clevor. An SCJ intake and some of knowlege that Scotty J posted up on the exhaust side with cast manifolds would be a killer stump puller.

Re: 4x4 puller truck final drive ?
Keeping the big block for the next step up class.
this is just to get me by before i go insane. I'm not going back and sourcing out all this big block stuff i got rid of....I/E iron intake/exhaust I've come to far to go back now.
Dont count out the cleveland stuff. THey flat out work in puller trucks.
I agree, big block would be better, but the cost and work involved to get it going to make it to 3 pulls max is tough to swallow.
The class rep wants to change the OEM exhaust manifolds rule next rule change.... which is in 2 more years. That would change things.
He's a chevy guy, i dont think he knows what'll hit him from the ford guys if they change that rule

The Cleveland stuff is bad azz. I used to have a 2V smogger Cleve in a 78 F150 and it would pull rubber when I'd hit 3rd gear. It was a granny low 4sp truck with big mudders on it too.

Re: 4x4 puller truck final drive ?
I think for shits and giggles it'd be cool to do a big cube 400 and run the CHI 3V iron heads. Beat the chevy guys at their own game with their OEM-ish cast iron heads
Of course that'd only be if I had way too much money kicking around.

at 30-32 to 1, you would have to spin it at almost 7 grand to get the wheel speed up to 20mph

with 4.10s and a c6 you should be at 27:1, which is about where you want to be

they allow 500" engines. but OEM cast in/out, mufflers, single gas carb.... kinda goofy rules.
most of them are x-over big blocks. Their class winner 2 years previous to this year was a small block....
I know i'm goin backwards wanting to use this old junk but I just want to get out there and have some fun, but i'd like to at least move the skid.

OK 500" in like 496 or 500" like 557..
I wouldn't waste my time with a small block if they allowed 500" Big Block in the class. To the best of my knowledge the biggest small block I ever seen or though of was a 460". Beside with all the nice goodie parts out there now for the 460 why would you not build a big 460 Block.
If it was me I'd go with the 557 Minimum P.I. Intake and a set of Dove or D3ve heads ported to the max by one of the guys on this message board.
Remember it's better to spend your money once on the good stuff then having to spend it twice when you junk the first one out trying to make it do more then it suppose to.
Dan
Re: 4x4 puller truck final drive ?
they allow up to 520 or 525"
I want to keep the big block for their "super stock" class. allow the same cubic inch but aftermarket heads, intake etc...
i just know i cant make it to many pulls for a couple of years.

I would definately be in favor of a truck on the track rather than just a pile of parts on the floor. Run what you have and have fun and go from there.

Well Schimitty I've been there and done that getting your a$$ handed to you week after week isn't no fun either.
Build to be competitive.

Re: 4x4 puller truck final drive ?
The clevor IS the build.
IS 27:1 going to be enough reduction?
I know what you're saying, Dan, However I dont care about winning at this point, as its not a highly competitive class anyway. I just want to make 3 pulls.
I have only watched 1 pull in the last 3 years. I just want to get out there cheaply for now. Until I can commit to more pulls i'm not going to do the big block thing.

dont scrap that old rig. It should be in a museum. All the "wrong" parts and never broke
this one will need a little more RPM.

Yep it's no fun going and spending the money on travel and fees knowing that you are going to lose. The truck I am running now was originally a 6cyl 5sp truck and I ran it like that untill I figured out some of the chassis and suspension. I did beat a few of the guys, but never cashed a check. Built the big block and now I've got a huge bullseye on my back every time I show up to a drag.TRUKPULR wrote:schmitty wrote:I would definately be in favor of a truck on the track rather than just a pile of parts on the floor. Well if your only going to make three pulls a year I guess you got a do what YOU got a do .. I make 36 hooks a Season. Log 4500 miles a season getting to the pulls and back home. Winning is not everything but I like to go to the pay check window to help pay for the fuel cost to go play each week.
Dan
Re: 4x4 puller truck final drive ?
The pay check window is nice, but the 3 closest pulls are 6 hours away. After that most of them are in the 8 hour range and a few up to 12 hours drive. I would be doing it "for the love" anyway.
