Re: cool dyno tool ...
something like that would make good way to test a new oil pan design make it out of lexan first to see how the oil flows with the new design.

or even testing new windage designs

the temp of the oil is well below the melting point of the pan ....... it will not work on a street car or drag car ...works well in a dyno scenario ....also works well in custom crank arm designs

Re: cool dyno tool ...
not sure on the melting point might check and see if i have some scrape at work tomorrow on some 1/4'' thick lexan got some 1/8 here at the house might check a peace of it i have a inferred temp gauge see what it say the melting point is

Re: cool dyno tool ...
That and a lexan set of valve covers is for the dyno. What's next? a lexan carb spacer to watch A/F flow? Some good ideas out there.

I was going to take my stock covers, cut the top off, then make brackets and bolt a plexiglass top on it. Decided not to, at least for this build.fatal addiction wrote:when u get the valve covers done let me know how much to rent everything for when i dyno mine

Re: cool dyno tool ...
Nick....Do you know what that on is actually made of? If it's Lexan, it must be calendered (laminated with something else) Distortion temp of Lexan (or any polycarbonate) is about 275*F. That's the point at which it will BEGIN to soften. Forming temp is higher, around 375 - 400* F. Problem is, if made of polycarbonate, it won't be a long-lasting piece, as all manufacturers of PC will tell you to avoid exposure to petroleum, especially at elevated temps. Petroleum attacks PC (clouds, crazes, cracks) in fairly short order. Acrylics will begin to soften at a slightly lower temp, but are more solvent resistant. I'd think there's a good grade of tempered glass out there that would do the job.
I've often thought of making stuff like that, but haven't seen the right thermoplastic yet. Tooling for thermoforming would be cheap, but the durabilty issue......Nah. Then again, if I made enough of 'em, I could run it a couple of times and toss it.
Thanks a lot, you guys.....Now I got this crap cooking in my head again.

I have watched a similar unit in use on a 460 at EMDO (engine manufacturing and development office),ford motor company some years ago..the engineering types were studying oil pump/pick up tube harmonics/movement with a strobe photo arangement..I was shocked...not suprising the oil pumps break!...Brian

Re: cool dyno tool ...
on the FE forum one member put a clear 1 1/2 tube in the top and bottom of the pan so he can see where his oil was in the pan on the dyno. He was worried he would suck the pan dry after a 9 seconds of full throttle. Long story short he was loosing oil pressure at the big end of the track and could not figure out if he had oil drain back issues, or if he was sucking the sump dry or widage issues. by putting a clear tube from top to bottom of the pan it showed what was going on with oil levels and answered all of the questions. Ill see if I can drum up a couple of pictures. It might make more sience
