how much fuel pump is needed
As the title says how much fuel pump (GPH) is needed for a 700-750 hp carbed gas motor?

My opinion and experience. If rear fuel cell you could use something in the 250 to 300 gph range. If front mounted fuel cell you could get by with alot less pump (holley blue or black). You will probably be going faster and building bigger in the future. I would spend a little more and buy once. Invest in a magnafuel 500 prostar with the filter and be done with it.

I will probably get blasted for this but,I know this for a fact. One of my racing buddies has a all aluminum FE powered 58 Ford that Kuntz&co.built and dynoed and it made over 850hp and has ran a 9.00 w/a 1.He has had a Holley black(140gph) on it for 5 years., and it has never ran out of fuel. My ole Maverick ran some 9.80's w/holley blue (110 gph) w/no issues.

Re: how much fuel pump is needed
I wouldn't use a single Holley blue or a black, but I wouldnt use a MF 500 either. Better to have too much than not enough. A good 250 Mallory would be perfect, and that is one of the better pumps I have used over the years.
On the other hand a smallish pump with a proper size inlet, filter, lines regulator etc is better than a big pump that is choked by the stuff being to small.
And just because one guy is running a single black feeding 850hp does not make it the "right" thing to do..............its sure easier to f up a motor if it goes lean...........and a pump being borderlibe big enough.........you have one little "thing" restrict it, electrical connection etc......well you figure it out lol.

Rick, I'll take some heat with you. I've ran a blue pump with a rear mount tank on my truck for 4 years and have never experienced fuel starvation. Proper line size and pumbing needs to be addressed. I've made passes that were 5-6 sec at full throttle with no issues.

Jon i'm not tryen to start a pissen contest but i'd like to learn something today.how can a motor get f cked up if it runs lean with gas? now i could see it in a case where you run it for a long time but a drag car or mud truck,i just dont see it. i've ran blue pumps too so fire away!richter69 wrote:I wouldn't use a single Holley blue or a black, but I wouldnt use a MF 500 either. Re: how much fuel pump is needed
I ran a blue pump for years as well. When I built my 427 windsor, at the top end off the 1/4 mile the fuel pressure dropped to 4 lbs. Regulator was set at 7.5 lbs switched to a BG 400 pump will be switching over to MF500.

Re: how much fuel pump is needed
I put a Magnafuel 300 on my Tbird last year after I busted my BG400 when I wrecked the car. I like both of them really well. I've ran a BG280 on alky on my Mustang for about 10 years now(it's not alky compatible) All are excellent pumps IMO

Re: how much fuel pump is needed
I hope the 300 pump likes alky better than the 500 did, the seal will leak after a few months and take the bearing out and lock the pump up. I even sent it back to MF once and it still happened twice after that. Gas was ok, but on alky.......well just keep an eye on it Dan.

Re: how much fuel pump is needed
Mallory Comp 250. Thousands of street miles and never a problem. I just run the bypass from the tank to the pump and it never gets hot on gas. Get a good Mallory comp 500 filter too.Holley blue and black are junk and noisy.

just a question, is it possible to have too much fuel pump?

Re: how much fuel pump is needed
As long as the plumbing and wiring are correct to allow the pump to function properly, and the pressure is not blowing the needles off the seats..............then no if cant be "too big" IMO...............but you'd be surprised how many set ups are cobbled up.......its a wonder then even work at all.

Re: how much fuel pump is needed
I'm a Magnafuel of Magnaflow guy. I've also ran 2 holley blue pumps out of seprate -8 lines out of the fuel cell, then to a Y block about 3 foot from the cell into a single -8 to the regulator up front. Then -6 to the carb. Never had any return lines in the system either. Never had an ounce of trouble on my 514 that ran 10.0's in a real heavy car. I only upggaded at the time to prepare for a bigger and better engine combo.

If you got the right color oil .......gavity feed should be cool for the fuel .

Re: how much fuel pump is needed
I found some info on aeromotives web sit. It says that a N/A engines will consume between .4 to 5lbs of fuel per horsepower and a nitrous fed engine will consume .6 to .6lbs per hour and a gallon of fuel weighs 6lbs. So 750X.5= 375/6= 62.5 gph. Thanks for all you input.
