I am building a pump gas 545 that will hopefully make north of 600 rwhp. It will be going in my 87 notch mustang, and I am a little lost on that trans to go with. Car will see alot of street miles around town with a few car meets that require driving from city to city. My main goal is a street car that can go to the track run a 10 second quarter mile and be reliable.

This brings me to my tranny option. When I first embarked on the big block idea I was sold on a c4. Lighter than the c6 and heard its very strong. Then I got a little worried I would be bored of a auto as I have always owened a manual. With that being said I have been doing a little research on the top loader. Read its, strong and parts are of plenty and I get to keep my car a stick. A tremec would be awesome, but the cost is just to much this late in the build. Figure 3 gears isnt enough and 5 is to expensive, so I will meet in the middle at 4 haha.

My main question about the top loader is if there is a big enough aftermarket for them? Is there people that make these things able to handle a big block over 550 rwhp? What top loader to try and get as there is a close and a far ratio? I dont plan on going to the track more than a few times a year and dont plan on launching at 7k ever. . If I reach that point a auto will be installed. I have read a little about the swap and aware of the problems I am encounter. Also is it cheaper than the tremec. I currently have a tremec 3550. Would it be cheaper to build it to handle my combo? Also the question of header clearance. I plan to use the d&d swap kit with the 2 1/8 headers. I know the c4 will fit, but what about the top loader?

Believe me I have pondered the idea. But 3 gears just seems like it wont be enough for the highway cruises I plan to do. I have been looking at a magnum t56.

i dont have a 545 but i have used spray in my 472 and it held just fine with a overdrive. i have over 120 passes at the track and even more playing on the street. i used spray only 3 times at the track because they throw me off i do. last year i even locked the converter on spray and every thing held but was worry. i use a 700r4 art carr and converter

I looked into a AOD but they are pricey to be able to handle a big block. I also heard its better to go with a aode as you can lock the converter when cruising. I can get a full magnum t56 swap with bell and what not for 4k. Not bad of a deal.

the 700r4 i have will lock up the coverter in 2,3 and 4th the coan adapter was $400 trans and converter $2300. but the 4l80e is the best overdrive they will hold 1200hp.
