Pics of a new 618 A-Head
This belongs to my buddy Bobby Brown. We installed it into his father-in-laws car this weekend. Got it running but had a couple of issues to address, nothing major though. Bobby has a full rnd. tube '66 Cyclone he bracket races. The T-Bird is going to be run in a 5.30 Index class.
It ain't pretty, but it's got the stuff on the inside!
Thats Brown under the car, I think he fell asleep on me!
Another toy they have in the shop.

They are the gold Comp Cams stud rockers. He had to knock the corner off the two center rockers on a belt sander to clear those valve covers. The car doesn't have enough room to use a taller valve cover.

i know they dont have much room under them.i had some chrome covers one time and you could see them move when it was runnen. why no room? hood clearance? i've saw some 1"spacers somewhere for bbf v/c.BigDave65 wrote:cool40 wrote:cool bird.what kinda rockers did he get to clear those valve covers?

The engine is far enough under the cowl that you can't take a taller cover off after engine is installed in the car.

Here is a pic of the Cyclone. This car was built by his father-in-law back in the 70's. It was one of the first cars to run in the 5's around here (1/8 mile) When he built the T-Bird he retired the cyclone to the pasture. Bobby decided to revive it, and drug it out of the weeds. The chassis was eat up with rust and was built from questionable tubing So he pulled the body off and built a brand new chassis for it. It's got a mild A-head 521 in it. It's painted just like it was originally. They operate a transmission shop specializing in racing trans.

Going Racing
Me and Brown are leaving about 3:00 this afternoon headed to Mooresville Dragway for a T-N-T and hopefully run the 5.30 Index at the PTRA race there on sat. This car has been 5.20's with a 557, so we'll see what the new piece has to offer then slow her down to the index.

Very nice. I like them both. I'm partial to the old stuff but I always liked the T-birds too.

Long Weekend
We took the T-Bird to Mooresville Fri. Warmed it up, went through the valves, and got teched in. Carb seems to be loading up. Went to make the first hit. When Bobby hit the throttle to start the burnout, it looked like a super stock pulling tractor. I've never seen a bigger cloud of black smoke come out of a car that was running pretty decent. Then it wouldn't idle down but he managed to stage it and pull the trigger. 1.22 60ft. on the back tires straight as a string. He lifted at about 3/4 track just to get a feel for it, went 5.74. We decided to put my carb on it and it sounded a whole lot better. Next hit it went dead left. That was all we were able to do Fri.
We've got a restrictor plate system to dial it in to 5.30. Went up for the first qualifier with the smallest plate, went 5.60 @ 122 with a 1.18 60. Last qualifier, put the biggest restrictor plate in it and went 5.310 for the #1 spot. 5.31@130 with a 1.14 60ft. and a .009 light on the pro tree. Won first rnd with a .014 5.32 on the brakes. They had several oildowns and it was getting terribly cold so they postponed the rest of the race to finish up at our next event. We have a bye into the next rnd.
This engine is a beast. I think it could easily push this 2500+ lb. car to some high 4.90-low 5.0's on motor when everything gets sorted out.
