Waste Oil
Has anyone tried using it as fuel in their Diesel? And if so what kind of results?
I'm sort of experimenting with it, so if anyone has any knowledge to share on the subject, Id be interested.

Re: Waste Oil
I might be wrong but I think it would be a good way to wreck a set of $4000injectors and a $4000pump to save a few bucks!

Not in an on road truck. Brother-in-law does it with his old Massey Ferguson, seems to like it a lot.

Re: Waste Oil
I've heard of it being done, but like Frank has said I wouldnt want to do it on a modern one.... too expensive to fix !!!
Old Farm Equipment or old diesel trucks with mechanical injection I'd say give it a shot.

Re: Waste Oil
I like to dump it at walmart for free.
If you want to experiment with soemthing that works really well you can go to chick fil-a and get there used oil and filter it with a home water filter. they use peanut oil and we've ran it with lots of success in duramax's and powerstroke's.

Re: Waste Oil
I put it through a filter and burn it in my furnace; when it's less than 5% it doesn't even get noticed.
Re: Waste Oil
I was up north a while back and this station had Biodiesel for almost a buck less a gallon. I tried it but as I was driving around the city I kept smelling french fries, so I pulled over and discovered it was my truck.... Man I was always hunger for french fries for about a week....

Re: Waste Oil
There are guys doing it in the older diesels. I wouldn't try it in a 6.0 or 6.4 Ford though...

Re: Waste Oil
I do bio diesel from time to time useing waste oil.I have also burned waste oil in my 7.3 with no real problems as long as it is warm weather and the oil is clean. Usualy will put in 3 gallons to a full tank and only when I'm going to pull a long distance and it will be burned out of the tank pretty fast. When you leave it in a long time I have seen it turn soft rubber parts to goo.It also will act kind of like a solvent and turn any build up or crud in your tank loose

Re: Waste Oil
i have a 99 F350 Powerstroke with 104K miles on it. It has probably 3K miles on it using Waste Oil as fuel with no issues. I filter it to 5 microns and blend it with Regular Unleaded gasoline. 15-20%
a buck to a buck and a half a gallon when all is said and done.

No issues on rubber parts but the detergent in the oils will clean your tank out. that's a good thing though.
Simply change your fuel filter until the tank is clean. Doesnt hurt to buy a fuel pressure guage also.
Re: Waste Oil
Knowing what it does over time to the injectors..............not worth it IMO. And I have access to a lot of waste oil...............

What does it do to the injectors? I know there are some guys over at the fordtrucks.com site doing it but they start up and shut down on reg #2 fuel.

Re: Waste Oil
It kills and gums up the fuel side over time, not to mention its not a legal on road fuel if you want to get into the technical side of it lol.

knowing? so youve encountered lots of injectors ruined by waste oil? so you know lots of people doing this?
You MUST have a reason you know.... usually this is gained from experience. Usually.
back that statement up with hard data, and keep in mind if you do you'll be the first.
BTW 2-5 microns is cleaner than the Diesel fuel you buy....
run through a centrifuge.....
Not saying youre wrong but if you cant prove it... all you got is your say so.... well sorry I know too many people with 200K on their Diesel Eng to buy it.
LOL I went back and re-read your post... the kicker is " over time" how much time? 10 minutes? A year? 8 years?
Arent open ended statements wonderful? never get pinned down that way...
got to love the naysayers lol

I have more than I can use in two shop heaters and my truck. BUT I do know someone that wants it if you are giving it away. As long as there is absolutely no antifreeze or water etc in it.
not reall good to have alot of brake fluid in it either but ATF is fine. if its alright with you Ill pass this info on to a friend of mine who burns it in his truck..
You do realize you could sell it right

how many engines have you worked on that had this issue?
And what were these individuals doing to filter the oil before they ran it?
Were they thinning it down to Diesel viscosity? Or were they just running straight waste oil? Did you find out the process they / him/ her used before they tried to use it as fuel? Its not like a heater you dont just run a line to a bucket of waste oil.
Fuel side? what specifc part are you talking about? the lines? the pump? Injectors? What happened to the injectors did they stick open? what was replaced?
Did they have an onboard fuel filter? Was it OEM or better? Micron rating etc...
not trying to be a smart ass but If you are going to discuss this, bring some data. You could be 100% right I guess in 6 months or whenever we'll know. I plan to continue until I get something weird going on with my truck.
I'll be the experimental wagon! and if it doesnt work Ill report it honestly, right here!
so far we are good to go though...

Just what my injector builders told me. I cant think but what type of ash deposit is left in the combustion chamber as well. Just seems if it were a viable fuel source someone would offer it for other uses besides heating oil etc. The injector tolerances on the common rail stuff is considerably tighter than the HUEI.

in all honesty the process in which you are doing it may not hurt anything, I imagine where the issues arise is where some redneck reads on the internet how JS racing is doing it and goes and dumps 10 gallons of used oil in his tank and proceeds to f ck it up..............which is fine as i get paid to fix it..........
You should see what 1 pint of urea on the 2011 does when it gets dumped into the fuel tank...............lets just say even at 17,000 miles I'm gettin' paid and not by Ford Warranty on this one............
There were a few Ford Tech's on the Ford forums using used tranny fluid, some had no problems and some did.
And i cant say I have had hands on issues...........because nobody around here runs waste oil in their truck lol.

Re: Waste Oil
I dont think Id try it in a newer vehicle. This is experimental at least as far as I am concerned. We will find out though. I get all kinds of strange looks at the gas pump. Putting gasoline in a diesel? People call you dumb, stupid, or insane.
I cant take any credit if it works or doesn't, Ive been watching some guys do it for a year, and finally decided to take the plunge.
We wouldnt have engines if someone hadn't tried something experimental at some point.

Re: Waste Oil
Just because you don't work on them doesn't mean that nobody runs it in their diesels
