help with engine numbers Empty help with engine numbers

Post  77ford June 19th 2011, 12:23 am

I need help with the numbers off this block, i believe it to be a 429 , but not sure. I was told it was original and original to the car when i took it out, but i can't remember what it was for sure been awhile. I just want to know what i can from these numbers, and will get more as i tear it apart. I am confused on the heads it it seems to be missing a number after the d, it is not there on either head. It will go in a truck.

Thanks for any help.

block... d1ve-a2a

heads d ve-a2a

intake... d3ve-a??

I also have another engine that i was told was a 429 also? I can only get the numbers off the head and intake right now.

heads...c8ve-e

intake...c8se-9425

The only way to tell a 429 and 460 apart is the crankshaft. A 429 would be a 4U and 460 a 2Y. The heads are more than likely D3VE -A2Awhick have 95cc chambers and the C8's have about 75cc chambers. Hope this helps.

That A2A stuff sounds like "Police Cruiser" application. With the D1 prefix it could be a 429, does the engine code tag remain under the ignition coil hold down bolt? If so and assuming it hasn't been changed, it will have all the information you seek.

Happy Motoring,
Dave.

The c8ve-e heads are from a 429 most likely but might be from a 68 460 ? my old heads are c8ve-e and they were pulled off a 429.

I looked and the one had the tag on it still, thanks! I am kind of confused on the numbers from what i have seen about these tags. It says 429 73 13 9-13 k813-a.

The block does say d1 and the heads does not have a second number so i am not sure what they are. But from the tag i guess it is a 73 with a 71 block?

I want to rebuild this and put it in a 4x4 is this a good one for it, or rebuild the 460 it has in it? 75 460.

I am gonna save the 68 block for a car or something else.

Thanks for the help!

All of the production 2 bolt blocks are of equal capability. The SCJ 4 bolt blocks are the only production blocks that have more value and capability. I would use it for your application, it will serve you well. Have it checked out by a competent machinist to make sure that all of the clearances are good on the mains, cam bore, cylinder bores, and lifter bores. Paul Kane has some good advice on oil mods for stock blocks.

I'm uncertain of the numbers & letters location on YOUR TAG as you have listed them. I've tried to post a picture of Ford's description of the tag, not having any luck with Photobucket this morning.

I'll make an attempt at deciphering the numbers you post.
429 / engine displacement
73 / model year
13 9-13 / uncertain
K 813 - 9 / (K) Month of October / (813) 429 w/Ford 4V / (9) change level

Below is the order described on Ford engine tags.

Top Line : CID / PLANT / MODEL YEAR
Bottom Line : YEAR PROD / MONTH / ENG CODE / CHG LEVEL

As soon as I can figure out Photobucket, I'll post a picture of the engine tag.

Dave.
