Did this truck come from the factory with the retarded timing set like the older 460 trucks did? Wondering if there is some cheap upgrades to make this truck more efficient? Gets about 6.5 miles per gallon now pulling the 28' inclosed trailer. Truck is a 2wd and appears to have a NP435 trans with the granny low first gear. Unsure what gears are in the rearend.

Thanks

Unless it has already been changed it has the later style timing set in it. I would bet that the trans is a Borg Warner T18 or 19. Cool

So if a person was to install a FMS-B429 timing set that might help that engine along some? The later timing set is the retarded set Correct? This truck has low miles and appears to be unmolested. Smells rich when ya start it cold otherwise seems to run good. Might have to take a look at the carb to if we pull it apart for a new timing set. Does a T18 or 19 have a lower first gear? I'm unfamiliar with that tranny. This is my first time monkeying with a newer truck. If you can call an 86' "newer" lol. Thanks

Thanks
The 1986 year model F-Series Ford trucks have a timing chain set that retards that camshaft timing. Installing a timing chain set which advances the cam back to the standard 1968-1971 cam phasing will increase power.

NOTE: Most (but not all) of the aftermarket double-roller timing chain sets sold today are designed around the 1972-up chain set (ie, modeled after the retarded chain set), which means that if you were to install such an aftermarket chain set using its "0*" straight-up position, you would actually still be at "1972 straight up" which is the retarded cam timing that you already have. In other words, you would not have changed anything. In order to get "1968-1971 straight up" cam timing with a 1972-up design aftermarket chain set, you need to use the 4* advance keyway with those timing chains.

Bottom line: degree your camshaft.

The Ford Motorsports B429 chain set is an excellent choice because they are designed around the original 1968-1971 camshaft timing. Therefore, using "0" on the crankshaft gear ought to put you back at 1967-1971 straight-up camshaft phasing. Also, that chain set has a 9-position lower gear, so you can really dial in your camshaft timing.

I still recommend degreeing your camshaft during the installation of that (or any) chain set.

I'm pretty certain that the T-18 and T-19 transmissions both have the same compound low gear ratio; however the T-19's compound low gets a synchro whereas the T-18's does not. (Someone correct me if I am mistaken.)

The 1991 F350 has a straight-up double-roller timing chain from the factory. It is not retarded and rarely do they wear out and need replacing.

Final post for the moment: Both the 1986 and the 1991 engines, which each use completely different cylinder heads from one another, will benefit tremendously from cylinder head porting. I am not talking about "all out racing head" porting, I am talking about improving the air flow quality and cylinder filling via the cylinder head porting for those model engines. With the proper approach to porting for both of your towing applicaitons, not only would power increase but so would fuel economy.

In the case of the 1991 engine: during the cylinder head work the E8TE head's smaller 2.00" intake valve will need to be replaced with a standard 2.08" intake valve (which is the common 429/460 intake valve size).

Thanks for clearing that up Paul. Is there a preferred ICL to put the stock cam at? I don't even know the what the duration/lift/centerlines are on the stocker. Rest of the truck is stock also. It appears to still have the factory single exhaust.

Just put it in at split overlap when you degree it, I wouldn't advance it any.

Tear the heads off, give em a good valve job, back cut the intake valves, grind out the exhaust ports, mill the heads. 030 to. 050. It will run lots better.
