If the heads haven't had the guide heights modified then the valve lift limits are about .535" maximum.

John I would recommend you get rid of the stock valves if you going to be turning it very high in rpms.Randy has some nice stainless valves at a good price just remember the old factory valve are 42 years old.

The stock valve spring will accept more lift than the head itself will allow. The stock spring pressures will be down from a good replacement.
Re: voodoo 61602 cam
a set of decent springs and retainers is under $150........

Re: voodoo 61602 cam
was looking at another cam..it has .503-.503 lift, but a tad more dur then the voodoo..2000--5500 rpm(summit racing cam)..that is under the max lift the head will handle , just concerned about the spring pressure, trying to save some $$ and not have to get springs..retainers..etc..even though they are only 110.00rmcomprandy wrote:johndickjr wrote:maybe 5500 is high as i plan to go, the motor has 22,000 original miles on it, i dont like to be cheap , but this is a major budget deal, whats the biggest cam a stock spring can hold69F100 wrote:John I would recommend you get rid of the stock valves if you going to be turning it very high in rpms.Randy has some nice stainless valves at a good price just remember the old factory valve are 42 years old.

Stop being so damn cheap......... put the right stuff in it...... its not worth the argivation of doing it twice over $110 worth the parts.

Re: voodoo 61602 cam
Just a few months ago I lightly tossed some OEM 429 CJ valves into the bead blaster for a quick clean-up. When they landed in the bead blaster, one of them promptly broke into two pieces right where they are welded together. Yes, they are 40+ year old two-piece valves and so trying to save money in this area brings a tremendous risk of costing you your entire investment down the road if you dont upgrade now.johndickjr wrote:69F100 wrote:John I would recommend you get rid of the stock valves if you going to be turning it very high in rpms.... the old factory valve are 42 years old.

That cam is a turd not to mension that its a chevy grind with square lift and duration. If you use that your motor will be done at 5k or thats what it did in a 460 that I had years ago. Get yourself a kit with the springs/hardware and the valves. If the motor drops a 42 years old valve (likely) its gong to cost too much.

Re: voodoo 61602 cam
getting the correct springs, and having the heads machine for the extra lift, sending a money order out monday for the front plate, its a 429 ci..flat tops..ill do a quick clean up on the ports..remove the ex bump, hit the bowls etc..using that voodoo cam and a blue thbnder intake and 850 demon, going to run it till i get my big motor built, it will not be all that fast , in my car, its a full race car but has a 12 point cage, swaure tubing rear frame rails, ladder bars, and tall 31x10.5w tires with 3.73 gears, i do have some 4.56 gears i amy try it but the motor will be a low rpm..prob around 5000-5500
