Anybody ever fool with a 300 six cylinder?
Are the Clifford intakes still available?
My dad has a 30 Model A that I've been thinking about putting a 300 and a T5 in and making a rat rod kind of thing with it. After seeing Wes' creation he built at the last Bash my wheels started turning...

Thanks Freelander.
Anybody know for sure if a clutch/plate setup for a T5 would bolt up to a 300 flywheel?

Be sure to use aluminum flywheel it will shake a steel one off in 5 min.

you can use a steel flywheel, but if you do just keep the rpm down low under 5k...once it gets over that they will rattle its self apart..

A "ZERO" balance S.B. Ford from FRPP is the same size and bolt pattern. (The ones having removable weights also fit).

Hey Randy......what brand timing chain should we run on the 300 6 cyl?rmcomprandy wrote:johndickjr wrote:you can use a steel flywheel, but if you do just keep the rpm down low under 5k...once it gets over that they will rattle its self apart..

That's funny you should say that because I had someone who was serious actually ask me the same question, LOL.
I can say that advancing or retarding the cam gear ONE tooth is about 7 degrees with valve timing.
Re: Anybody ever fool with a 300 six cylinder?
Early model 300 have a windsor piston pin, newer ones have the same pin as a 400 m. If you find a 65or 66 you can put a 351 windsor piston in it and it will be zero deck. Then add a ported 240 head for some serious compression. I actually put a .100 dome set of Kieth blacks in one, and with the 240 head the compression (if I remember right was at about 15:1) we ran stock rods in it and turned it 7000 rpm in a 88 oliver tractor pulling a sled.
I ran a bunch of rod brg clearance and at the end of the season the rod brgs were trashed, but it stayed together. The big end of the rod was pinching at the parting line due to the big end stretching.
It ran a big flat tappet solid and three big up draft carbs running on a home made intake. one carb per two cylinders, with two 1/2 inch tubes connecting the outer two carbs to the center carb so it would idle off of the center one. the outer carbs had the butterflys shut and only opened via staged linkage to open them after the center one passed half throttle.
This thing ran like a raped ape................
John, I think that engine is still running and for sale.........................

Re: Anybody ever fool with a 300 six cylinder?
Blake, How much power do you think that thing made?
I've been thinking of what to do with this Model A he has and it seems like the retro V8s and flatheads have been done. I just think a big 300 inline 6 would be cool under the hood (stretched of course). Stick a 5 speed behind it and it'll cruise for a long time off a small Moon tank...

Re: Anybody ever fool with a 300 six cylinder?
It would be hard to say, but all the other tractors in the class were running 292 chevys or a stroked 500 or better inch tractor engines. We smoked everybody with the 300.
The head was ported and had big valves in it. I would guess 400-450 hp (probably more than that) but it made killer torque too. It sounded like a pissed off bumble bee, I don't think it would have been happy on the street.
It sure pissed off the chevy guys, all of them think the 292 is the holy grail of inline sixes.............. WRONG
The 300 is the same cubic inch per cylinder as a 400 m You can put a ton of head on it and compression.

Re: Anybody ever fool with a 300 six cylinder?
There is no timing chain it is gear driven. I sold a truck load of parts to a guy in middle Tn. about 2 year ago.

John ... if you're really interrested in seeing what can be done with a 300 six, find some reading material about Bruce Sizemore's H/ Modified Production drag race Maverick called "Preparation H".
Re: Anybody ever fool with a 300 six cylinder?
The same guy I did this engine for has bought a billit crank roller cam and i beam rods for a 300 six , also in the deal was two heads complete for the engine made out of 4 C302B Cleveland high port aluminum heads.......... 650 hp. Raced in an altered

Joe Williamson out of Louisville had one of those cleveland headed 300s back in the day too.

The build-up of Sizemore's Maverick and engine was featured in the March 1971 issue of Car Craft Magazine. I personally am missing that issue.
He also later built an I/Gas Pinto with 300 six cylinder power.
As Blake said ... they had Cleveland heads welded together. One head cut exactly in half for the front and rear 2 cylinders and the center two cylinders of another head was fit into the middle and all welded together.
When Sizemore originally did it there were no aluminum Cleveland heads and he furnace brazed Cast iron heads together. Cut one cylinder off each head and only had one seam.
