Need advice on 7.3 powerstroke
Last night I decided to fix an exhaust leak on my 2002 f-350 7.3 powerstroke. The leak was on the turbo end of the up pipe from the manifold. As usual for me things didnt go well and the bolts broke offf in the y-pipe and I need to remove it to get the bolts out, I have been told you can take the turbo off and get the y-pipe off without pulling the engine or transmission. Is there anything I need to watch for when I remove the turbo and attempt to do this? Are there any suggestions to make this job easier on me(other than lift the cab no way I can do this at home)? And finally are there any tricks to installing these donut gaskets to keep them from leaking again? Thank You for your assitance.

you dont have to pull the turbo, take the up pipes loose at the ex manifolds, usually they will wiggle and twist out of the connector at the top. You can take the v clamp loose that connects to connector at the turbo and it will come off.
Be sure to replace the up pipes, just replacing the gaskets will not fix the leak. The pipes expand and contract with heat and after time scrub the pipes and they leak. I hear that international makes a bellows style up pipe kit, considering that style they use on the 6.0/6.4 also fail I'd stick with the stock stuff.

weld a nut to the broken bolts and they should come right out.

Re: Need advice on 7.3 powerstroke
in stead of going with the hi dollar coating i used a hi temp creamic paint on both the collector and up pipes no flakeing as of yet.i degreased the parts with carb cleaner befor i painted them.the name of the paint was Dupla color 1200+ degres.
putting that V band clamp back on the collector was a chore, kinda makes me want to do it over and over....."NoT"

Well I got it apart tonite had to remove the downpipe to get room to remove the manifold bolts which was no fun someone put the clamp on and the clamp bolt was pointing straight at the firewall. The clamp holding the y-pipe on was stuck and took a bit to get it off. worst part was while taking out the manifold bolts my flashlight i propped in the frame fell and hit me in the forhead and dang near knocked me out.

Jim I didnt see black spots I saw the red from blood in my eyes. Tried getting it back together yesterday and not having any luck getting things lined up, pulled the intake side off the turbo to get more room and noticed that the compressor wheel was showing some wear so i am ordering a new upgraded wheel and will pull the turbo to change it.
