That was just plain STUPID running a stocker in a combo like that, PERIOD.
Back in the day, that was one of the FIRST topics addressed by SFI. Just ask the ole timers.
Should have known better. Thats what happens when you get in a hurry.

Re: Boss 429 flywheel explosion -- on the dyno!
i refuse to run a stock flywheel in any motor except a stock one that is not gonna see any kind of rpm's
i had one blow apart in my old pulling truck
wrecked the block and cab
i got very lucky all i did was hurt my big toe
it wasnt till i tore the truck apart that i found my gas peddle
it was jammed up behind the glove box
ok so let me this right
insted of dynoing it a differnt day
they uesed a stock flywheel
so i would assum that the flywheel wasnt blanced to that motor?
i guess i never run any flywheel that wasnt balnced to that combo
thank god no was hurt
i feel bad for the guy
but a lil common scense would have pervented this

Sorry no sympathy here, would have been worth a trip back to the shop IMO.
Stock fw has no business on a motor like that.

This stuff scares the pooo out of me!! Will a SFI flexplate let go? Is there any shield to use on a C-6?
In the Cobra we built, we used a Lakewood bell and block protector with a T-5.
What is the safe way to go here?
There was a guy from town here with a big ol 69 or 70 Caprice with a BBC and a 4 speed. The fly wheel exploded, pushed pust the Lakewood, thru the block and up thru the hood. He wan't using a block protector tho.

Ow! That reminds me of a street race I witnessed as a kid. A 409 '62 BelAir against a '65 Covette roadster with a f.i. 327. At the top of 1st gear, the 409 flywheel came apart and put a big hole in the side of the 'Vette. Once again,....Ow!

Re: Boss 429 flywheel explosion -- on the dyno!
I have seen it happen a few times in person, both times was with improper parts for the application, just like this poor fella. Jon is correct the drive shouldn't have the deciding factor, I would have driven twice that distance to get the right stuff. I run all SFI stuff in my stock pull truck just cause I like my feet just like they are

Don't get me wrong I would never laugh at one's misfortune, but this could have been avoided.

I agree, it never should have happened. Lucky no one was hurt.

Re: Boss 429 flywheel explosion -- on the dyno!
the one thing I do not understand is he spent all this money on Body work and engine work and all the custom work every where and CHEAPED out of a POS flywheel???? Which probably just cost him his complete engine!
I mean guy's just think about it he has more in a hood hindge than he spent on a flywheel.... now which one is more important???
NOW that is STUPID
JMHO

Re: Boss 429 flywheel explosion -- on the dyno!
this was the first sentence of hi post.
Well, the Boss project was ready to go. All we had to do was dyno the engine drop it in and we're rolling. As we were heading to the dyno we noticed the new SFI flywheel was left at the shop 90 miles away. We had a stock 460 flywheel available so it was either use that or don't dyno and just put engine in.

I can't believe those were his only choices. He clearly made the wrong choice of the two. I don't understand it

I love the guys that are posting on the thread over there....wondering if it was a flywheel or a flexplate....lol......
I would feel more sorry for the guy if he didn't have twenteleventybillion dollars in his car.

Maybe, but, it was such a senseless mistake. I think that's the whole point. I'm not trying to gang up on the guy, I'm just trying to understand his reasoning.

Re: Boss 429 flywheel explosion -- on the dyno!
tuff crowd maybe
but i think it was careless
i am not trying to gang up on the guy
i feel bad that the motor went down
it is a nice build
but his choice could have honestly killed someone
i am suprised the guy running the dyno let him run a stock flywheel
and i will assume the flywheel wasnt balnced to the motor and i am a firm beliver
that every motor should have the flywheel balnced to the motor
unless your building a bone stock deal
we all make mistakes and we try to learn from them
i hope he learned fro this one cause next time he or someone next to the motor or car may not be so lucky
i guess this is kinda sensitive to me cause i had a flywheel come throw the firewall and almost lost my feet
and one pice missed a lil girl sittin in her stroller but a few feet
from that point on no more reving it up in the pit's and steel bell and sfi steel flywheel
