This tells me that the convertr pilot is not engaging properly in the crankshaft. Maybe it fits, but the crank is not deep enough...
That ring is suppose to go under the head of the bolts, NOT between the crank and the flexplate.

X2 I was going to say that but Mike beat me to it and also check the pilot hole make sure it don't have rust or something in it where it has been sitting and check the convertor for nicks or something wrong with the end of it.One way to check take it out of the trans and put it to the flex plate and make sure it fits right.

do yourself a favor and toss that ring in the junk box. also make sure the bolt are NOT too long. mine were long enough to stick past the crank flange and kiss the block....fwiw, zbob

Re: Trans wont turn when tight...
Before I put the converter in I took a cordless drill with a wire wheel to the back of the converter so it would go in the crank with ease. I took a wire brush to the crank real quick then wiped it with a rag that had trans fluid on it, figured why not? It'll help keep them from rusting.

OK. Did you stick the converter up there to check fit?

Yes, I'm pretty sure it went all the way in. I can re check it once I can get the trans out. I took my caliper to the crank and converter so I know they are both the large crank pilot size.jbozzelle wrote:OK. Did you stick the converter up there to check fit?

Justin when you get the converter from Bob I will need the snout O.D. and your crankshaft I.D..
I'll make you a bushing to fit.

Okay, thank you Bob! And Mike, I'll check it over again with my caliper. I'll get the measurement of the small part on the snout and a little farther down if it tapers bigger. Thanks!
I'm going to try to make it to tonight's chat, I have a b day party to go to but I'll probably be home in time...

Re: Trans wont turn when tight...
Okay, maybe I'll just put it back in with the old converter. Unless you send it soon Bob, because I want to put it back together with the TCI but I'll just use my stocker if you don't send it soon. Once I get the trans in I can bolt the cab down, and hook up steering, doors, ect. But I can't yet. Not being pushy, just saying if you aren't gonna send it tell me so I can put the old one in and get this thing rollin.

Re: Trans wont turn when tight...
I checked a bunch and put it on and off about 4 times. I used a marking compound and the problem is that the pilot on the converter is sitting in the crank maybe 1/16" and that's it. Its not going into the crank like it should. This converter was in it when I got it, the thing that has changed is I now have a 460 crank rather than the 429 crank. I remember measuring the crank and converter with a caliper but the fitment between the two is clearly the problem.56Tbird wrote:Hey Junior ,did you ever get your tranny lined out?

Correction, I did find the issue. New parts should be here tomorrow and my bud's coming over to help get the trans into place.

Re: Trans wont turn when tight...
The bolts were too thick. I learned my lesson and I'll never make that mistake again And Jim, I've actually been busy with a lot of stuff going on. And aside from that I'm trying to get a job still, no one CAN hire. I went to 7 places yesterday alone. I only got one application and I will either work there if I can or work in the shop my friend works at once he leaves soon. My girlfriend, I've been helping her and her family with stuff due to the fact that she was scheduled to move to Brazil on the 9th (which she did). Her dad decided he wasn't happy working at the Ford place up here so he took a job in Brazil. So yeah, I've been busy and exhausted.

(So yeah, I've been busy and exhausted) SURE you just got that the girl fever thing but that a good thing some times and some times not
Job thing I can beleive I know how that is I had a Vacation for 5 month not by my choice but back to working 65 plus hours aweek at another job and no time to work on mine but that ok I need some more parts for my upgrades so half of the overtime goes to the truck
NOW GET BACK TO WORK ON THE TRUCK

I've actually been cranking on it every chance I get. Between the f100 and my 97 f150 DD, but the f150 stuff is just maintenance stuff.

Have you tried a different converter to make sure it is not the pump itself

Re: Trans wont turn when tight...
I put the converter up to the crank without the flexplate on and the converter would not go in the crank. What I don't understand is I did measure them for fitment and now when I check the crank itself it reads 1.830"69F100 wrote:bb429power wrote:Yeah never mind, the converter is a pile, it will be thrown out. Maybe the inside measurement of my caliper is off, but I know the outside measurements is accurate.
