Piston question Empty Piston question

Post  Fordman September 4th 2011, 1:20 pm

Ok here is the deal. I'm having a 545 built using Eagle crank, rods, and JE pistons. The first machine shop was taking way too long, so I picked everything up last Wednesday. He bored the block, milled the heads, fly-cut the pistons, and started to balance the crank. Anyway, when he fly-cut the pistons, he broke into the first ring groove on the top side only. My builder now is saying that he doesn't like it, but it should be fine as long as I don't run it too lean. So has anyone experienced this before? If so should I be worried? I don't want to buy another set of pistons, but I will. Thanks in advance...

All the time ... usually on a Big Block Chevy notch or A460 notch.

Now you have one major gas port.

So, do you think I should use the pistons I have or replace them?

Do you need a cut near that deep?
How much piston thickness exists under the cut?
When he 'started' to balance the crank did he cut into the counterweights based on the pistons you have?
It is not optimal, but first you have to figure out if if you are the pig or the chicken in this ham and egg breakfast.

Unless you run it lean or have to much ignition timing or detonate it ... don't worry about it.
