reverse rotation on a BBF
Planning to reverse the crankshaft rotation on 2 of our engines.
Has anybody done this before on a BBF???
Any idea's / suggestions were to look at are welcome.
Thanks Frank

Twin engine marine cruisers use counter rotating engines. Whatever they use should give you a good idea of how to get there.
Camshaft, 2 gear drive timing set and starter are for sure ... some Chevy guys get their crankshaft made with the passages in the crankshaft reversed for oiling in high RPM stuff.
Re: reverse rotation on a BBF
good point on the crank oiling (rod pin oil hole clocking)

Thanks Randy,
Was planning to modify 2 of my current engines for this. But you are already the 2nd one that made a comment about reversed oiling in the crankshafts. Looks like I have to order 2 new billets also soon. That starter isn't a big problem for us. We have a hydraulic starter mounted on the gearbox...

Regular oiling indexing will work at a mid level RPM range ... (around 6,800 RPM or so).
reverse rotation
Frank,
I have worked around several emergency electric generators that run BBF's backasswards. There are certainly starters and other ancillary equipment available, and as was stated earlier, twin engine watercraft do this alot. Good luck!

Stupid Question Can you Just turn the motor around and Power off the Crank Snout?

Not sure if this helps or not, but back in the old days if you had a large or extremely deep irrigation well, we would tie two together, and drive one off of the other with a driveshaft from crank snout to output shaft. There are still several out there running this way still.

Re: reverse rotation on a BBF
i might be wrong here but as far as i know
even thou it is has multiple engines each one
still has it own bell housing and clutch
back in the old days ppl would tie them together but
you can never get 2 motors to run exacly them same
close but not 100% think of it like like running a race and having 1 leg
tied to your prarnters you will go but not as fast as if you were running buy

Crank to crank is to muck trouble.... Clutches... Blower belts ... Crankshaft...
Prefer to run each engine with its own clutch.

You are not the first one telling that. Only still need to know a place where I can get the good ones.

why would the seal be different ?
same seal on the FE' 427 , crank hatch marks were opposite

Capping/plug the lighten throw hole (like the FE427/Boss429 and crossdrill the pin like the Boss9 crank .Frank Kramer wrote:running 7500 plus.. so that will probaly not work for us.
Frank
That saves a lot of money if it would work .. don't see why it shouldnt

Re: reverse rotation on a BBF
I would think a mercruiser dealer would be a good place to look. aint the reverse rotating engine old school now?I thought they just use standard rotation and do it with the gear in a marine app.I've seen the reverse FE and reverse mopars but not a reverse 460.not saying they didnt have them, just never seen one.Frank Kramer wrote:meandad wrote:dont forget the crank seals are differnt also

Re: reverse rotation on a BBF
some of the seals have the "hatch marks" on them also. They would probably leak like hell if they were facing the wrong way.DanH wrote:meandad wrote:dont forget the crank seals are differnt also

Re: reverse rotation on a BBF
I have a pair of FE 427's in my boat. But honestly they are not intended for high RPM operation. 3500 ish is about it.
