The 557 is alive!
Finally the 557 is sounding good and ready to rock in the ol stang. Putting her on the chassis dyno tomorrow to do some final tuning. I'll update tomorrow with what she puts down to the tires.

Nick,....
It's my previous engine. The one that Seth Hembree built http://www.460ford.com/forum/showthread.php?t=131922
and I bought from him. I had Jet-Boat bob go through it a little while back.
Seth #'s were 838hp @6300 / 776tq @4800. I'm pretty sure when Bob went through it, he was able to squeeze a little more out of it, as it ran much better after the clean-up.

Re: The 557 is alive!
Well, not the day I was looking for. Not because of the numbers because I understand most all dynos will tell you something different but for the fact that we went there to tune. To get a base line and make adjustments to see what it likes. First pull straight off the trailer, 619hp bad lean as we thought it might be. Around 15 a/f with 102 jets. Second pull, bumped jets up to 108/109 621hp with around 17 a/f . Dyno owner says we went the wrong way 102 to 108/109 is the wrong way huh? Bumped the fuel pressure up on the bypass for shits and giggles, start to make the third pull, dyno owner shuts the car down and goes to clean his o/2 that was supposedly cleaned previously that morning. Came back, made the pull and a/f around 12.5 getting up to around 13.5 at the end of the pull. And still at 621hp. . A/f all around the board, a big jet change, and 2hp difference between 3 pulls? Loaded it back on the trailer. Going to another dyno. Waste of time and money unless the last pull a/f numbers were accurate then we should be good if we pull just a touch of high speed out. Never got to play with the timing. Oh well. Dyno owner seemed quite pissy throughout the session, had to wait a few times during my initial "hour" so he could apparently tend to other business, and we were not allowed to even be in the room with the car to monitor fuel pressure or WOT. Hell I didn't even get to take my video . Maybe just the way some chassis dyno places are, just not from what I have heard from other places.

Re: The 557 is alive!
Took it to another chassis dyno yesterday. Much better dyno! The numbers will hurt your feelings if that is what you are there for but as a tuning tool to make adjustments and see the changes as we wanted it was nice. It also had a 1/8 or 1/4 mile simulation that was pretty cool (but felt wild as hell!!!). Last dyno showed on the last pull afr was looking decent after erractic numbers through the 3 pulls. Off the trailer on this dyno, carb was still nasty lean. After 3 hours of trying to get it dialed in, the conclusion is it is over carburated. Cant get the 1250 to pull fuel. Huge jet increase, tightened high speeds and intermediates up ridiculously and even plugged of 4 of the 8 emulsion holes in the metering blocks and still lean on the top end of the pull. Maybe with more compression and turning the thing to the moon it would be ok. Ordered the -1 QF 1050 today. I think it will like that alot more with the power range we are dealing with. Back to the dyno next week. Will update.

did you talk with Patrick? a 1250 should work fine on a 557" A460 headed motor.
is you fuel system up to snuff?

Re: The 557 is alive!
-12 to BG400. -8 return from bypass. -10 from pump to BG 4 port. -6 from 4 port to each bowl. I know there are alot of BG haters out there and rightfully so but I worked there for a few years and know some of the guys that really know their shit on the fuel systems. I too have saw alot of people on forums like this running the 1250's and have dyno sheets with this engine making good power with good afr with a qf 1250 but with this compression, camshaft, and powerband, this prosystems 1250 has to be over kill for my combo. When I bought the engine it had a bit of flash in the exhaust ports. In this situation it just don't seem to want to pull fuel. Smallish cam, street compression, peaking hp in the lower 6k range, you tell me. I tried calling Prosystems earlier and didn't reach anyone. I did recieve a call back but by that time I had already talked to enough people to make a decision and purchased a new carb. I am by no means bashing Prosystems stuff, I just think their 1250 is more than my engine wants. I know you guys know this BBF stuff very well and if you think I am going the wrong direction I would be very appreciative of your opinions. Thanks

Re: The 557 is alive!
IMO I would have sent the 1250 back to pro systems and had it checked out 1st before buying another carb.
Buying a new carb may not solve it.
Any Vac Leaks? Ignition working properly? What Fuel? Did you disassemble the 1250 and clean everything?
Also just because you have a big fuel system doesn't mean its function properly, have you tested it? Cleaned everything out?

Re: The 557 is alive!
Put the QF "big" 1050 on it and dynoed again today. Made 20 more hp than last week and the afr was pretty close out of the box. Put a little bit of jet in it and stays pretty steady around 12.25 afr.

Re: The 557 is alive!
It made 620 on the dynojet. No changes and straight to a Mustang dyno it did 545. With the QF today on the Mustang dyno it did 565. So as you can see there is a big difference between dynos. The reason we went were for tuning purposes. This weekend is the true test

In my opinion you could run the qfx 1250. The reason being the main body and possibly the metering block. The stock qfx comes with a stepped booster and we run a straight booster in the racer engines. The qfx main body has allowed bigger carbs to be run on smaller less hp engines. There is also a longer venturi length on the new qfx. Longer measurement from booster to throttle plate and will help with signal. If you go back to the dyno sometime let me know and I may be able to send you one to try.

Thanks Phillip, I really appreciate it! And would like to take you up on that offer if you are serious . When you guys were playing with this engine on the engine dyno, It made more power with a QF 1250 over a Holley 1150. The reason I went with a 1050 was all the local carb guys were convinced that was what it wanted. Even QF recommended the -1 1050 with the 1.750 venturi so thats what I went with. I had a nice consistent afr pretty much out of the box and better numbers throughout the entire curve versus the prosystems 1250. No matter what we did, and we made some drastic changes (went from 102 jets to 110, hardly any change, drilled the 110 jets with a #22 still bad lean, went from a seemingly already small .028 hs to a .018 and .060 intermediate to a .028 and got better but still lean, plugged off the bottom 2 rows of emulsion holes and got the best afr but was still 13.5 at the beginning of the pull getting up to 14.5 at the end of the pull), we couldn't get the prosystems to pull fuel. If we had some bell boosters we would have tried that. It is much better with the qf 1050-1 but I would be interested in how the QF 1250 would do.

Re: The 557 is alive!
The weather finally cooperated with us and got her on the track tonight and I am very happy! I had to get my runs in for my competition license and the best pass was on one of the moderate runs that I had to let off before the 1/8 and the car went 6.05 @103 (again, had to let out) with a 60 foot of 1.32. Had some other issues on the full pass runs so had to calm the car down to get the runs in so we can race tomorrow but def have a 5 second 1/8 mile car now . Let the fun begin!!! For no more than this engine is, I have to say I am very impressed! Thanks Keith

Re: The 557 is alive!
Well, today was my first bracket race since I was 19 years old (14 years ago). Last night we found that leaving @ 3400 although hurting the 60 ft put us at 6.06 1/8 to be right where we wanted to be in our 6.00 bracket class. Today on our first time trial, she didn't hook. We changed lanes on our second time trial, 6.02. Dialed in a 6.04 for the 1st round and ran a 6.04! Got the W. All the work, money, and pains in the ass over the winter meant nothing after this feeling! I wish I could go on with a good story but our shitty weather for the year struck again and rained us out AGAIN! BUT, I am very happy with rolling off the trailer with so many changes and it is working very well. Can't wait till next weekend! What can I do to feed this need for this feeling for 6 more days?

Thanks Nick! I have this strange desire to withold my sig update until I have a proven 5 sec pass that will hopefully come next Friday's test and tune. Being in a 6.00 limited class, I have to launch lazy to keep the car within the bracket on race day but I plan to let er eat Friday
