Get a 4 legged stand rated for 1250 lbs. I bought a decent one from Northern Tool several years ago. It was too short for me, so I cut the neck off and raised it 6". Holds a BBF just fine.

I have one also. Pretty good piece for the money. In adition to this one I have huge, HD, homemade 3-leg.

Caught it on sale like this and then used a 20% off coupon.

Engine stand? Empty Re: Engine stand?

ADT at $200.00. I've had this one for several years. Holds the engine up nicely. It's tall enough (I'm 6'3"). It folds up when not in use. Always it use and have considered buying another. The crank rotation is great.

Cons:
- replaced the casters
- had to shim the gearbox
- had to lengthen the lower arms for the wider 460 blocks (had to do this on every engine stand that I have ever owned)

My Harbor Feight stand doesn't fold like David's (wish it did), but it's tall enough for me and I'm 6'7". It's a nice height to work on it with.

An old thread but a new question. Has anyone used the unit from summit with the gear head? I have a regular one from 20 years ago but I would like to try the gear head unit for spinning over the 460.

Alotta stuff I have seen like that from summit is same stuff as HF for more money. Shop around a little. Alot of times HF will have online coupons and in store sales on same item and they let you use both discounts, I got a collapsible engine hoist for $100 that works great doing that. Was $300 regular price.

Engine stand? Empty Re: Engine stand?

So after looking around I went ahead and ordered the unit from Summit. They show it as their brand but it is made by Sunnex Tools out of SC and I figured I would give some feedback in case others are interested.

I am not sure why but Summits price is $100+ less then everywhere else on the web. This is the 1000# gear driven engine stand. I picked this unit because it fits in the middle of my engine hoist unlike a 4 post unit would.

Feedback:
The original packaging was pretty beat up and torn (not sure if that was UPS or the boat from China) but it all arrived. There was some scratches from the poor packaging but was not a concern for me but might be for others. It all assembled well. One note however, the caster bolts must go in the way shown in the manual. If they are upside down they hit the caster and the casters won't turn properly. At first I thought it was a poor caster but turned out to be poor installation on my part. After assembly I cranked it to test the gear box and I found a spot where it wouldn't turn past. I tried it from both directions and it hung at the same spot. Mad There is only 3 screws on the cover and after removal I found some metal filings in there I guess from the plant. Not a big deal, 3 more bolts and it was in the parts washer getting cleaned up. The worm gear was wore funny and there was a chipped tooth on the other worm gear. I called summit and they offered to have UPS pick it up and they would send me another one (great service). The box was trashed now plus I really didn't want to disassemble it for a quick and easy part change so I called my local Sunex warranty facility and talked to a fellow there. He called me back with a direct number to Sunex where I talked to a fellow in warranty and he said he would send me a new gear box.

The unit seems pretty heavy duty and I think I just got a bum deal on some junk in my gearbox. If the hole thing was junk I would just send it back but I am going to give them the benefit of the doubt and try the warranty service as it will be much easier than packing this thing back up and shipping it back. If that doesn't work out Summit has a 90 day return policy so I still have the option to replace it regardless. While initially bummed out so far the experience has been positive for the quick service.

I'll keep you updated.
