Slick Growth
I was measuring tire to wheel opening and I'm trying to figure if 1 inch of clearance is enough from the tire to the tip of the wheel opening. Can anyone give me an idea of how much they grow? I'd hate to tear up a fender. 29 x 9 x 15 MT.
thanks,
Gordon

Re: Slick Growth
how wide of a rim? how much mph?
an 1" is gonna be tight, if its not too much to notch it I would.

8 inch wide. I'm not sure of the real speed. Somewhere north of 90 mph.

need to make sure the gap doesn't change with the suspension moving up and down, depending on the suspension the axle can move for and aft as well.

Re: Slick Growth
Is this a radial ply slick??
If so very little clearance is required. A friend of mine runs the 9 inch nitemare class with a radial ply slick, 66 Chevelle , 9.30's , and you could barely fit a #2 pencil in there for clearance.
A regular slick on the other hand has the tendancy to really grow like Richter was saying. Better clearance it now instead of having it try to do it itself.

Re: Slick Growth
it is a regular slick. I don't want it to self adjust the fender. I know i can get 28 x 9 (or 10) x 15 tires under it ok, the 30s are just a little too tall.
I may just say the heck with it and buy drag radials.

Re: Slick Growth
I would not make the jump to the drag radials. The tires I am talking about are a regular style slick that is a radial ply, not drag radials. To me unless you have a class that requires drag radials, I think they are useless. JMO. Hoosier, M/T , and Goodyear all offer a regular style slick in a radial ply, I am pretty sure that the 29x9 or 10 is a readilly available.

Scan down the page and you will see some 29.5 X 9 in a radial and a 29.5 X 10 also. The radials do run a little smaller than the regular carcas slick.

Re: Slick Growth
Gordon,
I'm running 29.5" tall tires, and have a little over 1 inch of clearance to the front of the wheelwell opening.
At 110 mph and below, no rub issues.
Occasionally I see witness marks on the wheel well opening after running the 1/4 in the 135 mph range.
