rotor phasing? Empty rotor phasing?

can someone explain rotor phazing to me? What is this done for?

It's putting the rotor button in proper alignment with the distributor cap, when the dist. is locked out, usually with a crank trigger. I have an old cap with a hole drilled right at the #1 terminal. Crank up the engine, shine the timing light through the hole and set the dist. where the rotor button just leads the terminal.

so this is to phase the dist to the crank trigger? Would you ever need to phase a rotor on a regular dist set up? Thanx for your explanation.

YES ... but, that is a bit more difficult to do.
