Engine Identification Empty Engine Identification

Post  markc1962 October 6th 2012, 8:34 pm

Hi All,

I am new to the site so I appologize if this has been answered in the past. I am looking at purchasing a motor out of a 1970 Lincoln Mark III that I believe is a 429 or 460 motor. The block is stamped with DOVE-A and the heads appear to be DOVE-C. In my internet searches I am getting conflicting information and hoping I can get the correct answer here. Based on what I have found is that the DOVE-A blocks are either 1970 or 1971 CJ casting numbers. I also have seen that all the DOVE-A blocks have the thicker webs on both the 2 and 4 bolt main applications. What I really need to know is if the DOVE-A blocks are truly CJ applicable blocks (even if it has a 460 crank in it). Me and my son are looking to put this motor in a MACH 1 and would really like to verify if this block is applicable for a CJ. If the block is CJ we want to change the heads to actual CJ heads to match. Any help would be appreciated.

True CJ bloks have a letter stamped on the front behind the timing cover. Dove-a Blocks are all the same except the 2 or 4bolts from the factory. I have a 460 from a 1973 something???? It is a Dove-a block and it had the pre emission D3 heads. The webbs are nice and thick :}.

A Dove-a block with Dove-c heads is not a CJ motor it's a thunder jet / the base passenger car motor. It will look correct if you put the proper CJ parts on it.

Thank's dfree and tennessee. So to clarify, if this ends up being a 460, this DOVE-A block can be turned into a 429 CJ with the correct heads and intake along with a 429 crank?

Keep the 460 crank, its worth a bunch of power and nobody can see it.
