Need Pontiac info
I am doing a 4.250 stroke 4.185 bore 400 Pontiac, heads flowing 330+ @ 28 inches. 468 cid
What kind of power will a stock 2 bolt block carry. Just as a 460 has been carried up over 1000 hp, I know that 800-850 is as far as I will build one for a customer.
What is a realistic hp number for a Pontiac? I can build 15:1 compression with a flat top with this deal, and that is what my customer is wanting, but I am a little nervous about this deal.
I'm thinking this thing will make 700 hp with the cam and intake optimized. Just afraid it may be a time bomb........
Anybody have any experience building and dynoing these engines.

Re: Need Pontiac info
I've only done a couple of street 389/400 motors years ago, Might talk with Adney Brown He's got the Pontiac disease.
They do have 4 bolt conversions for them and there where 4 bold blocks back in the day too.

Call Shawn or Jim ...................http://pickettsauto.com/Pickett_s_Auto_Racing.html
You may get close to 700 with a stock block but that's pretty much the limit.

Thanks for the info Travis, I think it would be best to hold him at around 650 hp. It should have killer torque with the runner size the heads have and run very well.

Re: Need Pontiac info
Blake,
As you know the lifter bosses hang out "naked" in those blocks and they are pretty much unsupported. Thus the need for some sort of lifter girdle or bracing for big roller cams. Many Pontiac guys had tried running the bigger cams and as a result broke the lifter bosses/bores out of the block.

Re: Need Pontiac info
Kaufman High ports and I'm not sure on the intake yet, but it will be a single plane to match the heads. Heads flow 330 out of the box and a good bowl job and they go 360 fairly easy.

Re: Need Pontiac info
Might be a good investment for the customer to get an aftermarket block?
Those heads have some pretty good potential as far as Pontiac stuff goes.

Re: Need Pontiac info
I would tell your customer to look into after market block or as charlie said some type of lifter bracing. A friend of mine just split his block two weeks ago right along lifter bosses--second time he has split a block, running high 9's in a firebird

Re: Need Pontiac info
The route he will have to take is a reduction in hp, he can't afford a good block.

Re: Need Pontiac info
To be safe I'd look at reducing the compression too.... 15:1 is pretty stout.

Re: Need Pontiac info
I'm suggesting going to the Edelbrock RPM heads. That will drop it to around 13:1dfree383 wrote:To be safe I'd look at reducing the compression too.... 15:1 is pretty stout.

Re: Need Pontiac info
Damn shame to spend all that money on some good heads and rotating assemble and kill it because of a weak factory block.
The good iron blocks look to be about $3,000 +/- for the poncho's
Looks like tha Kaufman heads can hang with some SCJ / P-51's with the right work.
