I have used both and not seen a problem with either.

I use grade 12 Socket head cap screws on all the blocks I convert to aftermarket 4 bolt caps.

If the studs don't interfere with assembly I like using them, however in applications that limit cylinder head removal, bolts are my preference. In a few lightweight projects I have participated in I documented no difference as to the clamping force or the ability of studs to clamp the main cap versus bolts. I am a believer that the main webbing and/or material must be present to appreciate additional clamping.

Dave.

Pioneer studs. They are slimmed down in the middle and allow more cap walk than others. I used them and was very sorry.

im assuming main studs...?it was either this site or over at the other one.but there was a debate over cap walk.looks as if ford had two different main bolts.one had a solid shoulder from the bottom of the head all the way down to the threads.it was thought to help prevent cap walk over the other main bolt that ford offered.its shoulder only came down about .500 from the bottom of the head and necked down from there to the threads.basicly there was a lot of room in between the main bolts and the main cap bolt holes.the arp studs are rather small as well between the bolt and the main cap bolt holes.its like it needs to be shimmed to take up some room in there.

I have never seen factory bolts with a shoulder all the way down.

A little off topic, and I think it has been discussed before, but what is the thought on using the grade 12 socket head screws for head bolts?

That's what we used in the mid 1980s for the original TFS heads. There were no stud kits.
