Balancer on long snout crank
I got my motor back and it has an ATI balancer on it. It looks like it's sticks out to far, how far is to far? It measures 2.75 from back of balancer to timing cover, will it be ok?

Yes the spacer is there. That is not my concern, It just seames to stick out to much. I was hoping to get some measuresments, maybe even pictures to find out if this typical.

Take the bolt out and see how far recessed the end
of the crank is in the hub.
of the crank is in the hub.

The balancer is right at the end of crank, there is 2.75 between back of balancer and timing cover.

Re: Balancer on long snout crank
That's where it should be...
What I have done in the past, depending on how long the keyway in crank is, Is to trim down the spacer.
This lets you move the balancer back and then make a spacer for the front side, behind the bolt/washer..
Important thing is to still have enough keyway engagement..
Then there is the small issue of belt alignment....

Re: Balancer on long snout crank
It was put together by a very good builder, I believe all key way engagement is good. The ATI balancer is made different than my Fluid damper (fluid damper has an offset back about .250) mabey more where as the ATI is all the way at the end of crank.

Re: Balancer on long snout crank
Hmmm
That might be the number for the shell...
The assembly part number for a long snout OE cover deal should be
ATI 917620.
If it is on the crank all the way, it is probably ok.

Re: Balancer on long snout crank
SO I pulled the balancer off, thinking about putting balancer on first then spacer in front. Balancer is made like sbf balancer so it will go through timing cover to crank gear. Any reason this won't work?

Re: Balancer on long snout crank
Key way only goes so far back. Balancer probably wont engage the key properly...

Re: Balancer on long snout crank
well there's your problem right there...
Standard BBF balancer has no extended hub... the spacer goes under the seal the balancer goes on after..
Some stroker and 429 shotgun cranks have a shorter snout and use the balancer with a hub similar to a small block...
You have a mixture... you need someone that knows what they are looking at to check it out...
Post some pics...
