Some SOB broke into my shop
Some SOB broke into my shop at some time during the week. I hadn’t been out there since Thursday of last weekend, and yesterday my younger brother came up to use my blasting cabinet. When we got to the side door it was ajar and the door knob was laying on the ground. Looks like they took a hammer to it. The only time I can think this would happen was when I left to pick up the F350. My brother drove to Lowe’s and got me a new door knob, and this morning I’m going back to get a Deadbolt to add on. Out of all the expensive tools and parts I have out there, the only thing I see missing is my old Laptop. Well, the joke is on them. That thing was a piece of shit anyway, but the idea of somebody violating my space just pisses me off to no end .
I called the Sheriff’s Office and a Deputy came out and took the report and said they'll cruise this are more often. I guess from now on I’m going to have to check it every day, plus I going to setup some video surveillance cameras in case they try again. I suspect it’s that trash that lives next door to me.

Might as well invest in a security hasp and padlock. Hammer to door knob sounds like a crack head... looking for something to hock for quick money. Had any friends with "friends" drop by? Usually its someone that's been there, knows whats inside.

Re: Some SOB broke into my shop
I had a shop broken in to several years ago. I wasn't as lucky as you as they stole about $7k dollars worth of tools. But, they didn't get it all and they didn't touch and parts. I made the place like a fortress after that. Two weeks later, they came back and took everything else except the cars and the BBF parts. They were probably mad that I made it that much harder to break in to, but it didn't stop them.
Probably time to borrow Dan's dog.

Re: Some SOB broke into my shop
Doug so sorry to hear about this. I hope they don't come back. As for the "neighbor" a while back I had my van broken into...parked in front of my house on a residential street with street lights and my neighbors all had their front lights on......they stole 9,000 worth of carpentry tools, broke the back window, opened the back door climbed across the tools and opened the side door... Funny my next door neighbor's relatives were on an indefinite visit, but when I woke up and found out that my van had been broken into it seems that they had left in the middle of the night........They had seen me come home and open the side door every night, so they knew what was in there. Cops came nothing, just "we'll write a report for the insurance company" No finger prints nothing. Good luck securing your shop. Camera's even fake ones are a deterrent. Glad nothing happened to your vehicles!!!

Cops said I have the right to defend and protect my person and property. I'm talking with one of my nephews right now. he's an IT guy and is going to help me setup day/night cameras with recording and phone alert. If they come back, somebody is going to jail

There ya go. Only problem is that their relatives can sue you for wrongful death, so the best thing is to have a farm field in the area and a shovel, or a river and several cinder blocks
Oh and let us know what camera system you go with. I have not been broken into yet but with all the break in's and thefts I've been reading about (especially trailer's) a camera system seems like a real good investment.
Re: Some SOB broke into my shop
The beauty of AZ castle doctrine. Threat of bodily harm or threat to immediate domicile does not apply. Trespasser with property lines legal to shoot. Many nanny states you do not have lethal force rights unless human life/safety is threatened. Know your local laws before you confront someone. If you do ever have to pull a weapon be ready to use it. 12 gauge with 00 buckshot is great home defense weapon. Two rounds center mass and thief wont bother you any more.

That sucks big time.. I posted some info on here years ago about security cameras and I designed and installed my system. I love it. My wife can log on and view the cameras from her phone any time. I don't pay any monitoring fees.
My advice to you is...
Visit this site and read read read..
http://www.networkcamerareviews.com/forums/about6666.html
I got POE cameras instead of wireless. POE = Power Over Ethernet which means each camera has a cat 5 cable running to it to supply power and transfer video back to your switch.
If you have wireless cameras, you will need to wire in a plug at each camera location and wireless is not as good in my opinion.
Buy the best dam camera you can afford. If you cant make out a plate number and face, it worthless. To get the best picture at night, you will need a camera with IR.. It will HELP to light up the area you are monitoring but is not enough. You need additional lighting, aim towards a street light or add some exterior lighting.
Watch you tube videos from the manufacture to ensure what camera your purchasing will be clear enough to identify the F***.H***. that is robbing you. Again don't waste your money on something that will not identify the person your monitoring.
Cameras can trigger alarms and you can set them up to notify your phone when they have been triggered. You can select the area or areas in the camera window that will trigger your camera on and off. Yes most have motion detection and you can pick and choose what to monitor.
My camera allows me hear and talk to the person if I need to.
Here is how a the system works... Camera --> Cat 5 cable --> switch --. Cat 5 cable --> Computer router --> Cat 5 cable --> Home computer
If you need any help, just ask. I would like to see you catch the SOB..

Re: Some SOB broke into my shop
Thanks for the info about the cameras. For me to run a CAT5 cable to my shop it would have to be the inground type and 175ft is a long way to bury a cable.
Hi Doug
You could run the entire system in the shop and access your cameras wireless thru your phone or desktop in the house or shopping.. You don't have to monitor the system via cat 5 in the house. I hope I am making sense here.
You could operate a complete system in the shop, camera, switch, router, laptop? and get access to you lap top wireless thru your phone, etc...
The bad part about the whole thing is that you need to leave your shop computer on all the time. The cameras do have a slot for a card to record in case you lap top take a crap..

Re: Some SOB broke into my shop
Sorry to hear you shop was violated.
There are many short term surveillance and deterrent things you can do. Like mentioned above the camera systems will take a little time but are invaluable. The trail cams can easily be disguised with basic things like an old piece of plywood with a hole leaning somewhere, or many other places which do not draw attention, just make sure it does not have a flasher (led power light). There are also motion sensors that can activate a speaker with a big dog barking coming from inside the shop when they activate the sensor. As for the camera systems you can also attain wireless cameras, and as long as you have internet in your shop you can lock up the DVR and the router in a secure location and it will record onsite, but also have live viewing ability ability for your phone or computer available. These systems have come a long way in the last few years. If you have not yet bought the deadbolt buy one with a separate ring outside of the lock portion as they cannot be broken with a pipe wrench.

laying there when you get home.
