Reading spark plugs
I need to learn how to read spark plugs. Being that I am the owner of a 700ish hp engine and plan on running nitrous down the road.
All I currently know is if a plug is black it's rich, light brown it's good, new looking or missing the strap it's lean. What is the best way to learn? I want to learn about how to read timing, heat range and there is something about looking at the base of the ceramic I know nothing about. What is the best way to learn without someone that knows showing me in person?

For later reference.
See, I had always judged the color at the tip electrode and not the base. I did know that in order to get a good reading you needed to kill the engine as soon as possible.
Question, if you have the engine tuned for one heat range and you determine you want to go to a hotter plug rather than add timing will that change your color and have to re-adjust your fuel?
Is the spark plug reading kits worth purchasing or most people just buy a magnifying glass?

A cheap jeweler's loupe works well. You can find a zillion of 'em on Amazon.
