When the chassis twist and you have a locked front diff you no longer will have a choice on where the truck drives it will drag you to the right because that tire will be planted and the left will lift. I have seen this happen many times when mud racing, trucks with open front carriers always went straighter and faster
This is one reason why I was think of some type of limited slip. It only makes sense that you would lose steering with a locked front axle. As you said, your at the mercy of the truck.
I mentioned a helical differential earlier in the thread, but I don't know anything about them. What are some good limited slip differentials?
I had good luck with a Spicer Trac-Loc in my mud trucks. They aren't overly aggressive and helped keep the big tired, small axle 44 fronts alive

Once again, I have had no time to work on the truck much less call to see about parts! Heck, I haven't even been deer hunting yet, I'll have 3-4 deer by now.
I got a K&N air filter with the extreme top and SS braided brake lines for Christmas! I'm working on getting the differential yokes heading my direction. Plus the transmission mount finalized.

Purchased a complete, used, 9" axle today! Now both axles will be dropout third members! Found it under one of those trailers that was made out of a cut in half truck! Now it just needs an aftermarket third member, axles, brakes, gears and dif. The cheapest housing I could find on the internet was 250 plus shipping. Picked this one up for 100!

Update 01/31/16
The Ford 9" I bought is junk! It looks like someone used a torch to remove the axle bearings and wasn't being careful. I would have new housing ends installed and that would make the axle purchase a waste of money, I would basically be building a new rear axle!
I mounted the axle yokes and test fit the gear box on the transmission. The current yokes don't look like they will allow the front driveshaft to clear the transmission pan. I will have to order 1350 or 1310 yokes so I can use a 3" driveshaft instead of a 4"

Clearance in question. It will have a slip yoke on the end of the driveshaft. Thoughts?
The gear box output shafts are 1-3/4"-10 spline, I know I can get 1350 yokes not sure about 1310.

Can you "clock" it down to where it's below the pan?

That is true, but I don't know how much ground clearance I would have because I want the truck at factory height or lower.
