pinion depth 8.8 gone
had a housing all back braced and tubes welded ...then brought to the local guy that sets up a lot of 8.8 for racers in the area said he has never seen one this bad
pinion depth is so bad out , said a .010 ship wouldnt even go
almost like the carrier is way off and the rear end was heated up to much
Came back from vacation today to hear this
im pissed not sure what to do , now i either get another housing and start over but just paid good $ worth of work done with on housing
i have axles strangege already and spool
going to have chassis shop that did work look at the rearend and find out the cause
ANY OF YOU GUYS EVER COME ACROSS THIS ?

Re: pinion depth 8.8 gone
None of that should have affected the pinion depth. Are you sure the bearing race is fully seated and or is the matching one for the pinion. I apologize if it has already been together with all of the components. I've done many 8.8s and don't see how the casting would have been affected by welding on the tubes , or for that matter to the main case itself.

^^^^^^Same. Does not add up. Run a solid crush sleeve just like the GM Boys though but, that's for pinion bearing pre-load. Are the gears new and machined correctly?

Re: pinion depth 8.8 gone
This was nothing to do with gears the issue was when using ford tool that simulates the carrier bearings .more or less the initial setup .
The issue was actually a defect in the pinion bearing ..same part number .018 difference .
It's all set now and together ...guy that sets these up never had a bearing issue from new bearings
Now I just need to get a hold of butterbean for that convertor

Re: pinion depth 8.8 gone
Please Tell me they where not Timken? I guess everyone can have a Bad Day in the QC Department if that is what happened, or maybe it just got mixed up along the line somewhere. Glad it was an Easy Fix anyway.

It was a Timken .....same part #
I work in manufacturing , so I know first hand it can happen you just try to limit it
The height of the bearing race was the issue
