Bad luck or bad lifter(s)? Cup came out

I was breaking in a new cam in a fresh build and to my horror I could hear a loud ticking after a few minutes of running.

Long story short I pull off the intake and found one lifter with the cup sitting sideways next to the pushrod.

What may have caused this? Bad lifter(s)? Maybe I didn't set the preload correctly? These were new comp hydro lifters. Can is new too. Luckily the cam looks fine and the lifter face looks fine too.

Should I get a new lifter? Or try to put it back together?

I may be wrong,,, but isn't there supposed to an E clip or some sort of snap ring that holds the lifter together?
If there is, did you find it?

These are comp 832 lifters. They have this wire clip not an E clip

I need a new intake gasket anyway, might as well order a single lifter too for peace of mind.

Anyone have any idea why this may have happened?

I doubt it floated the valve, it never got over 2k.

So just that valve needs a shorter pushrod?

I have had that happen to me years ago at the track with my 69 Mustang but I flooted the valves. You might want to check that valve and make sure it not sticking for some reason.

about 30 times, that i can rem, very common, just saw a guy I know do this very thing. I told him to put the lifter back together and set the valves right, nows its been fine for a few weeks. how loose were others?

The other valves were not loose that I noticed, though I accept I may have set one valve incorrectly.

I went ahead and ordered another lifter, it was only 7 bucks and I needed an intake gasket too. I'll recheck the preload on all lifters now.
