no oil pressure
I finally got my motor in my truck and all hooked up. Started with the gauges today and didn't get a oil pressure reading so I pulled the sencor out from behind the intake and fired it up and no oil came out
.. Does this mean the pump isn't working???

Re: no oil pressure
It means oil isn't pumping, there could be a couple things to cause that.. oil pump driveshaft got installed right?

Re: no oil pressure
Thats what it was. It was rammed off to the side into the camshaft gear. Don't know how buddy screwed that up
Re: no oil pressure
If you been running it without oil pressure you better be tearing it down for bearings and inspection.

Re: no oil pressure
If that was a new cam, I'd plan on replacing that, too, along with the lifters. Five MINUTES ??

Re: no oil pressure
Five minutes is probably over what it ran... I fired it up for probably 90 seconds when I got the muffler on and probably not even that long when I hooked up the gauges and buddy that built it fired it up on the floor at his shop just to check for oil pressure and said it had pressure but dont see how that is possible when the drive was not in the distributor or the hole the bottom of the distributor go's in.

A pan gasket is cheaper than a new engine

Re: no oil pressure
Not sure what you mean? Got a new pan gasket going to take the pan off and inspect everything for starters and hope everything is alright and if it looks like it is than do the bearing anyway to be safe break it in and hope for the best I guess. I'll have to go with what the guy I have helping me says because he builds motors and he's the one looking at it
Re: no oil pressure
After 5 mins without oil slinging around inside the crankcase the piston skirts, piston rings, & cylinder walls might be toast too.

Not trying to sound condescending but if your buddy builds engines and made that kind of catastrophic mistake... Well... he wouldn't be touching the engine again IMO.

Re: no oil pressure
And that same buddy is the one who claimed it showed oil pressure when it couldn't have? Do you really want to trust him again?

No not the same guy is helping me know I'm done with him... He's not a buddy and the only thing he'll be doing is reimbursing me for what has to be replaced.
Re: no oil pressure
How can the oil pump drive shaft not be installed right? How would you get the distributor in if the pump shaft was not installed properly (missing, I can understand).
I don't believe there is enough room in the block to have the shaft sitting cocked in the block (not seated in the oil pump or distributor) and still have room to install distributor.

Re: no oil pressure
I had the oil pump shaft fall off once while installing it with the distributor. Didn't notice or hear it fall of the distributor. What I did notice was the loud "clank" when the crankshaft hit it when starting the engine up for the first time. It also put a nice outward crease in my oil pan.

Re: no oil pressure
Hopefully you have learned since then that the shaft goes in with the PUMP, (from the bottom!) not with the distributor. And the clip goes on the distributor end.

Re: no oil pressure
I tried taking a picture but cant get it to show up... Theres lots of room for the distributor to go in the dive is way pushed off just touching the side of the camshaft gear
