break in issues, could use some advice
Had a new engine built. Machine shop is breaking it in on a stand. Talked to them this morning and they fired it, ran it for five minutes and were getting varying oil pressure, and lower than they felt comfortable with, 45 at 2000 rpms, so shut it down. I went in and pulled dizzy, primed it with a drill and saw a lot of fluctuation. Pulled valve covers and primed it. Oil is super aerated. Bubbly oil coming out of rocker oil holes. So seems pretty clear its pulling air at the pickup to pump or pump itself? They are pulling it off the stand and pulling the pan to see whats going on. Question is, running it with the aerated oil, did it #*@% it up. Should It get broken down, bearings checked etc. I know no one can tell without looking, but what would you do? Fix the issue and fire it up, or tear it down? And anythinh else that could cause this besides air leak in pickup or pump. Thanks for any opinions.

If you didn't lose complete oil pressure you should be good but if they got the pan off check the bottom end. You can pull the main caps off and rod caps with out damaging anything if they look good just tq them back down and fix the pump problem.

Running it on a stand with no load will not hurt the bearings as long as there was lubricant present.

Thanks for the encouragement. Went in after work and we pulled the mains, looked brand new, didn't go any deeper. Strained the oil and didn't find anything. Pickup was good, everything bolted up well, good clearance to the pan. Can only think its the pump. Going to replace it and prime it in a bucket of oil, hopefully no more air. Don't know what else it could be.
