Advice for Oil level 460 - need to mark dip stick
ADVICE : I need to mark my dipstick for correct oil level on aftermarket high capacity sump and dont know if dip stick is original.
So what the oil height level should be at, from the block to oil pickup is around 8". should the level be to below the crank, say just below windage tray level.its around 4".?

I'd change the oil and refill with whatever amount you use, check where the oil is on the stick and mark it there.

Re: Advice for Oil level 460 - need to mark dip stick
Hi Norm, that is the problem I dont know how much oil to use. The motor is out and i have access to bottom end and dipstick now so if i know what level it should be then i can measure and mark the dip stick so when its back together its right.

I don't know any other way to do it. Someone would need the exact same components you have, just saying the sump depth doesn't describe the capacity.
If you list exactly what components you have, pan, dipstick etc. you might get lucky and someone could help.

Is it not a basic principle of where oil level should be. Like below the crank weight 1/2 inch etc....the dip stick i think was cut orignally because different pan and the pan is for an australian car so not sure how many people will have the same setup.

Re: Advice for Oil level 460 - need to mark dip stick
Front sump pan that appears to be about 8.5" inches deep. I would make sure the engine is level, bolt the pan on, and add 5 quarts, pull the dipstick, and mark it.....then add 3 more quarts and mark it.
Or you could mark it in 1 quart increments up to 8 quarts, then measure how close the oil level is to the crank.
You dont want the crank dipping into the oil. Of course, while its running, the oil level is somewhat lower because its being pumped throughout the system.

set the pan up so it lays back about 2 deg's with an angle finder, then fill with water till it just covers the baffle. Then drain and measure the water, add 1 q for filter.
pan looks small.

What pan are you using? My ASR Pan is marked 8 litres . ASR pan which is same as High Energy also.
8 litres equates to approx 100mm deep which puts oil level just below the windage tray
I do have some pics just need to figure posting here

Different oil pan designs require different oil levels withing the pan while running. I would find out what is recommended for THAT pan and mark accordingly.

Fair point, will see if I can get an answer from them.

Re: Advice for Oil level 460 - need to mark dip stick
I have both High Energy and ASR pans , identical designs . The H.E when i got it had an amount marked on it of 8.5 litres .
The ASR is engraved on the base near the plug with a serial number and 8 litres
I used some solvent from parts washer to mark the amounts

Re: Advice for Oil level 460 - need to mark dip stick
In those pics is my ASR pan. It is identical external shape to High Energy that I also have . In that pic is the ASR and the amount is 8 litres as shown as per what is engraved on the base. The 8 litres is just under the louvered plate @ 100mm deep
My High Energy had a small sticker on it when I got it said 8.5 litres . Just dug out my notes , 8.5 litres was 105mm deep.
The extra 1/2 litre was 5 mm higher up the stick, not a big difference either way
