Foxbody 460/C6 swap and engine build help
Hello, so I have done some researching on the 460 and C6 though still not 100% on the route I want to go. I am trying to keep this budget build, so not looking for $2500 heads and all that business. This will be mainly all street car.
I am working on a 1988 Mustang that was a 4 cylinder. I know most of the info on it, rear end swap, suspension/body supports, etc. I got one of the last sets of D&D 2” mid headers, swap poly engine mounts, trans bracket with mounts. With that I know it kind of limits me on being able to drop the k member by much if any. So just remember I have hood clearance to worry about as I do not want a 5” cowl hood.
For the engine I picked up a 1990 460 that will need a rebuild. For sure .030 over as it has some minor pitting. I was just going to use the stock crank and rods, then go with new pistons. Bad idea?
Again going on the cheap, I plan on getting some Speedmaster aluminum heads (have engine guy check the heads of course first). I have a Torker 2 intake because again keeping the height as low as possible.
Camshaft I will probably go Hydraulic Flat. Don’t hate me, but I like the choppy idle, though I don’t want to skimp on performance to have just the sound. I know you can get in trouble with that as I had a Thumpr cam in a 350, and it was complete garbage. Not sure on gear ratio yet, but will be going C6 for sure as I have one that needs a rebuild. No idea on a carb just yet.
Thanks!

Sounds like a plan.
Sometimes these Weseco Forged 460 Pistons Come up Cheaper, They are getting harder to come by as of late.
These Have The Large Intake Valve Relief for Std. Location Valves Also.

Hyper Flat Tops are Still Cheap Though.
I Would Pay for having the the Recip. Assembly Balanced, rods resized. ARP Bolts would be nice also, if in the Budget.
Open Chamber 95cc Heads Depending on the Cam Choice. If You want more Performance go Closed Chamber 72-75cc and a Bigger Cam. You will be pushing the Edge on Pump Gas Though.
Get a Used 750 or 800DP Holley and Rebuild it if you go Open Chamber Heads and Mildish Cam.
850-1050 if You Go High Compression and Bigger Camshaft.
Hydraulic BBF Performance Cams are Hard To Come By now (All BBF Cams For That Matter) So Keep on The Look Out for Them.
Here's a Nice One "Hot Street HFT" . Not Mine, Yet. Lunati VooDoo 705

Thank you Supervel45. Too funny as just today I saved those same pistons on eBay. They seemed to be the best deal for forged. So I may try to go with those if I stick with the stock rods/crank.
I had no idea about the cams being hard to come by. I am learning I am sort of getting into the game late. Especially with trying to get the headers. Surprised I was able to get those ordered as everyone seems to have pulled out of the swap market. I guess everyone going Coyote and LS swaps now.
I was thinking 750 as well on the carb, as an 850 seemed like it could be too much by the posts I was reading. My mechanic friend can get me setup with a 750. He was the one that had the Torker 2 thankfully and selling it to me for $200
Here is another question. Electric pump or mechanical?

Oh I saw the specs on that cam and it looks nice! My only worry would be the 4.11 gears. Hoping to not go over 3.73 to keep the cruising RPMs down a little.
Here are the heads I was looking at:
Oh I can’t post the link since I am new, but the item number is 293847444014

I Would Go With a Holley Mechanical 130GPH Race Pump.
If you want cheap Ching Chong Open Chamber Heads, That's a Good Price.
200 on a Clean Holley 750DP is OK. If He Kits it, It's a Great Price.
800DP has 750 Primary's and Almost 850 Secondary's and is a Good Compromise in my Opinion.
^Either Way will be Fine Though.
What Size Tires?
Don't Rule Out 3.31's and 3.55's for a Big Block Street Car to Quick is My Thought. Low Gears and 3 Spd. Auto's Get Old Quick.
PS: I Believe That Guy puts Those Heads on Auction Sometimes, and They May Go for 900

Re: Foxbody 460/C6 swap and engine build help
Good info. Okay I will be sure to order the mechanical pump eccentric kit as I kind of wanted to go mechanical for simplicity. I am good at electrical, but I really do not want to get into modifying tanks, but I still may need to sump it.
Heads will be the last thing, so I will keep watch to see if the Chinese specials go on sale. I just want to keep the weight down as much as possible up front. Will be doing the battery relocation to the trunk and all of that. Maybe even an aftermarket K member.
I think most run a 28” tire, but not sure if that’s streetable or not. I need to do more digging on that. Oh I am all for 3.55s and 3.31’s, but my buddy claims I would not be happy. I didn’t understand that as a big block should have enough torque to still get you moving. Though again, I’m a noob on these engines. My first swap was a 77 Spitfire with a 4.3 V6 and the gearing was ridiculous. That and the small tires made the high RPMs want to drive you crazy going 55 and above. But at the same time I understand this is going to be a straight line car and I have to compromise. We can’t have it all. Haha

Gears are Cheap and Pretty Easy to Replace. If 28" Tires Fit I would go with Them.
Make Your Parts Wish List and Track Them Down as They Come up on Special. I get Offers Everday When I Put BBF Stuff on My Watch List, So There's That Too.

Let me know what you are after, I have a bunch of other stuff rabbit holed on good prices.
Paul Kane, Here has Some Nice Sealed Power HFT Lifters, "The Good Ones", "En Hencho Medico" That he Inspects Individually, Â That I Would Recommend, If You Go HFT, He Also Has Some Good HFT Cams to Go With Them.

Re: Foxbody 460/C6 swap and engine build help
Thanks I really appreciate that!
And again funny as I attempted twice to bid on those exact same ones. I went up to $552 and it wouldn’t fly. I would go more, but being after Christmas and the wife’s bday coming up I have to watch the bigger purchases.
I wish I knew on the crank as I haven’t had a chance to tear it all down yet. It’s at my friend’s shop and he will be gone for 2 weeks. I was lucky to pull the heads off yesterday and see the walls. That’s how I knew I for sure need to go  .030 over due to the pitting. Water did sit in a couple of the cylinders, so fingers crossed on the crank. Shot a bunch of PB in the cylinders to hopefully help out some. May need to go ahead and have them cut the crank anyways to be safe.
Also I planned on getting the  CLOYES 93522X9 timing set on Rock Auto.
And yeah I am thinking I am going to stay HFT, even though I always fear cam break in. I may go with roller rockers though? That sounds great about the lifters. Any idea how much those are?

Awesome! Again thank you for all that info. I looked at that post earlier today and ignored it because of the date. lol I will try to get in contact with him to see about the TC and those lifters. Also good to know of the valves to go with those aluminum bares.
Yeah I tried to research those coolers and saw some saying they hated them and were trying to delete them. I just wasn’t sure if it would be more of a hassle than what they are worth. The good news is this engine spins freely, so that was a bonus LOL
Got those bearings on the saved list as well!

It did come with EFI heads and those puppies are going to the scraper. I saved the rocker arms just in case.
Not sure if you can reuse head bolts on these engines or if they are TTY? May need to save them too.

^ I Would save the Fuelie Parts off that Engine.
A Core Supplier would likely give you a few bucks for the heads.
The rest is worth a few bucks also.
Scotty is putting the Fuelie Heads and Intakes to Work with Carburetors and Taller Spacers so There's That.
Same with The Brackets and Bolts and Accesserories(Sp). and Like You Said The Oil Filter/Cooler Adaptor, It's All Worth a Little to the Right People.
The Trucks That These Engines Come Out of Are Getting Very Popular Now and People are Starting to Restore Them and Need Parts.
The Rocker Arms won't work with Studs and Guideplates. These Might Though.

Thank you for the heads up! My wife may fire me after this one. lol I went ahead and threw my hat into the ring. Waiting for a response from the seller.
Also Paul was great and very helpful! He schooled me on many things 460 and I did order the lifters and TC set from him. Slowly making progress on parts.

^Go For It. He Offered 94.50 for what it's worth. I said Till MidNight, Please Buy Them So I Don't.
I Also Asked About His SVO 460 9 Keyway Timing Chain. I Don't Really Need It, Cool Box and All but, Maybe.
You Need The Gaskets So It's All Good
