Bunch of questions about 460s
I've been a sbf junkie for a while but the urge to build something BBF is upon me.
Let me start by saying I do not know much about 460s!
I am going to look at a motor tomorrow, it is a D0VE casting and standard bore, is there a rule on which castings are 4 bolt and which not? or a way to tell without pulling the pan?
At which point powerwise do you abandon a stock BBF and move into aftermarket blocks?
Not sure where to get a stroker rotating assembly from for BBF, any ones recommended? or ones to avoid?
I know fox body mustangs fairly well, what needs to be done to one structurally to withstand say a 750 hp BBF,
with the smallblocks, through the floor subframe connectors and welding up the torque boxes made them fairly stiff, BBF stiff?
Lastly I like stick shifts, aside from TKOs/toploaders what are good choices for an 80/20 street strip car?
Any feedback is appreciated
thanks
Matt

Re: Bunch of questions about 460s
Stock DOVE will probably not be a 4 bolt, as these were primarily on the CJ, SCJ engines with the DOOE-R heads, or BOSS9 stuff. Only way to know is drop the pan.
Rule of thumb on the stock blocks depends on prep and parts. Some have gone over 1000hp properly done up, but usually 850 or a little more if they are 4 bolted and hard blocked. The A460 and Eliminator blocks are well worth the money over doing those two things if a guy was to build a serious engine.
Adney Brown is the crank guy. Lem Evans at BF Evans Ford is great to do business with also. I'd do a forged kit from either guy. Adney can set you up with a kit that is balanced, or Lem will get you the components if you have a guy that you want to do the work on.

750 is not hard to get out of a bbf.I had a mild 532 with a flatt tapet cam and blue thunder heads made
just a little more than that shifting at 6900 just like any motor you have to get the heads for the HP you
want .Good thing is these things are easy to get cubes in .Unlike a stock bbc motor you can go to 557.

Re: Bunch of questions about 460s
Well here is my dilemna, I def have the BBF bug, however:
I'm building a Fairmont, done a lot of work to it and have a killer new SBF drivetrain complete
sitting in my garage. I have a feeling it would be hard to get my money back out of the 347 and custom stalled
reverse manual C4 I had built for it. Fairmont is in the final stage of bodywork and paint, it never had any rust and we went a little crazy on it. Subframe connectors, torque boxes, cut out spare tire well, fuel cell, battery box, manual rack etc
I really like the Fairmont and finding another one and going back to square one would be painful.
Ideas or am I SOL?

Build a BBF on the side, Race the 347 and Swap it out when the SMall Block gets Lazy..... The C4 will work with a bell swap......... Fox Swap stuff is pretty plentyful.

Not so sure that sbf is going to get lazy real soon, it is brand new with all the bells and whistles, I was under the impression that a C4 would not last behind a healthy big block, bad assumption? It is a 157t case fill unit....

Re: Bunch of questions about 460s
Well I've decided to attempt to sell off my new 347 stroker and PA C4 tranny with converter and put the proceeds into making a nice BBF. I will need to start accumulating parts for the BBF now, looks like I'll be starting with a 2 bolt D0VE block. I am thinking of putting 4 bolt caps on it, heard good things about the Milodon pieces, any others I should be thinking of?

I'm not saying that a DOVE block won't do what you are after, but an A460 block would be well advised here. By the time you get it fitted with the caps, line honed and such, you will be close to the price of the A460 and have a better block for the future.

Re: Bunch of questions about 460s
Well I got the whole motor (minus camshaft) and intake disassembled and cleaned for 100, D0VE block wth D3VE heads, a useable crank and all brackets. I figure on selling what I'm not going to use and having less then nothing in the block.
I'm a newbie with BBFs but to my way of thinking buying a set of caps for 300 and having it machined for appox 450 puts me in a strong block for 750. Thus leaving me a little extra buying power for heads.
Let me know if I'm thinking crazy

Re: Bunch of questions about 460s
What are you guys doing for motor mounts? Aftermarket k members?
Trying to sort out my best option for mounting a BBF in a Fairmont that already has a V8 mustang k member in it/
thanks

If your only cruising to the car show and back, I would still go w/engine plates. jmo

Re: Bunch of questions about 460s
Well kind of a bummer, went to pick up my block today and on the way he called and told me it was not a D0VE but a D1VE
so I did not bother going(long drive). Then I started thinking, at my desired power level (@700hp) does it matter which 460 block I use? I did want to use the Milodon 4 bolt caps on the middle mains and I do not know if they fit a D1VE.
Aside from being slightly beefier downstairs what are the other differences between the two? Big difference in power levels?
thanks

Re: Bunch of questions about 460s
The milodon caps I've seen are for the flat rail dove blocks, but as far as 2 bolt blocks a D1 blosk is just a good as any other one. You can get cap for the also, it just take a little more effort to install them.
